He knew Colin Chapman from the very start, helped build the Lotus IIIb and the Lotus Mk VIII prototype, and was Team Manager for Lotus at the 1955 Dundrod TT. From 1953 he was a spare time volunteer draughtsman to Colin up to 1959, when he was posted by BEA to Belgium. He was a regular camp follower at the early Grands Prix from 1958-62, usually to be found doing the lap scoring in the Lotus pit. After retiring from the airline in 1987, he spent 11 years manufacturing some 300 of his own design of recumbent pedal tricycle, the Trice, which he still uses for shopping and leisure rides.

The three years that Ayrton Senna drove for Team Lotus, 1985-87, was one of the headiest periods in the history of motor racing. Not only were titanic battles raging between the four leading teams - McLaren, Williams, Ferrari and Lotus - in the second phase of the mega-powerful turbo era, rivalry between the top Formula 1 drivers, on-and off-track, was wound up to fever pitch. Behind the scenes, intrigues fermented between team personnel, sponsors and component suppliers. Johnny Tipler interviewed many of the people involved in F1 at the time and with Team Lotus in particular, and without exception they were keen to discuss Senna's tenure of the prime seat at the Norfolk team, where the young Brazilian was warmly regarded and his talents held in high esteem. The book draws on this wide variety of first-hand sources to describe the atmosphere and politics within the organization, as well as examining the cars Senna and his three successive team-mates, de Angelis, Dumfries and Nakajima drove, from Types 97T to 99T, with reference to their technical evolution. The chronological theme includes chapters detailing Team Lotus's performance in each Grand Prix, interspersed with chapters penetrating the underlying themes - mechanical and political, including the mood at Ketteringham Hall in the season prior to Senna's arrival when Mansell was at loggerheads with team manager Peter Warr. The book pulls no punches in its final summation of the effect that Senna had on the once glorious Norfolk squad. Although the time that Senna spent at Lotus marked the team's final flowering as a Grand Prix winning outfit, it has been largely overlooked. Given better reliability, he could easily have become World Champion with Lotus and Johnny Tipler's detailed investigation redresses the balance, providing a comprehensive record of this short but fascinating era. It brings to light the state of affairs within Team Lotus during the post-Chapman period, and more fundamentally it demonstrates the level of excitement and commitment that Senna aroused. For a grief-wracked team following the death of its founder, Senna's transitory reign was its heroic last stand.

BLUE &amp; ORANGE by Michael Cotton is the story of Gulf Oil and a history of motor racing sponsorship that stretches back to the 1930s. This large format 196 page full colour book from Coterie Press focuses on the drivers, the cars and the events associated with the Pittsburgh company and their famous logo through the best part of 70 years. 
The story begins with Harry Miller's Indy 500 challenger which, in 1937 was a hugely innovative mid-engined single-seater that boasted nothing less than four-wheel drive and disc brakes! 
In 1966 Gulf Oil vice-president Grady Davis bought himself a Ford GT40 and formed a lasting friendship with John Wyer, the race car constructor based in Slough. This meeting would turn into a full-scale racing partnership that lasted nine eventful years. It was perhaps, the most successful commercial partnership there has ever been in endurance racing, the Gulf Ford GT40s winning the 24-Hours of Le Mans in 1968 &amp; 1969, followed by two more successful seasons, now representing the Porsche factory. This was truly the golden era of sports car racing. 
Pedro Rodriguez and Jo Siffert established new speed records everywhere they raced the Gulf Porsche 917s, and their exploits at Le Mans, Spa, the Nurburgring and Daytona are now legendary. Steve McQueen's film 'Le MANS' gave the Gulf Porsche 917 an iconic status, and a chapter in BLUE &amp; ORANGE features photographs and stories of McQueen, never seen before. 
Gulf went on to win the 24-Hours of Le Mans again in 1975, sponsoring the Mirage Ford driven by Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell, and returned to Le Mans with Derek in 1994 when he drove a Kremer Porsche K8 to fifth place. 
In the late 60’s and early 70’s Gulf had a hugely successful partnership with Bruce McLaren in the fields of Can-Am, Indy cars and Formula One. This liaison produced numerous victories and championships before in 1995 Gulf Oil returned to a racing partnership with McLaren, and the privately owned team of Ray Bellm and l'Oreal chief executive Lindsay Owen-Jones. The team ran in the BPR Global Endurance Championship and were once again successful, with Bellm winning the championship in 1996. 
In their centenary year, Gulf Oil sponsored an Audi R8 in which Stefan Johansson won the Le Mans Endurance Series. The story of this campaign is the final chapter in a beautifully illustrated book BLUE &amp; ORANGE.
