Untold Power: The Marriage of Art and Technology

"Most of us know that the widespread use of robotics, particularly artificial intelligence robots, will most likely have an adverse effect on the workplace and that the new jobs that emerge will require new thinking skills that the current educational system does not provide. It is also becoming clear that communities seeking to attract and nurture those most qualified for the new jobs must also renew themselves if they are to be successful. Most important, the emerging workforce must be able to engage both right and left hemispheres of the brain in-order- to solve complex problems, in increasingly creative ways. This central imperative, has resulted in the increasing demand for both artistic and creative skills along with technological and science-based skills. This treatise makes those arguments for reinvention and while it is not yet known precisely what makes people creative, many ideas about fostering creative people and institutions are discussed. The future is now. The Covid-19 pandemic has greatly accelerated our use of technology and our responses to changes we must make in education, the workplace and the workforce that have been lying dormant for too long. At the heart of the changes we must make is the vital realization that art and technology are the new benchmarks of the global economy, an economy where creativity and innovation are shaping a new world order. We are entering a new era and we must act now to prepare for a very different future"--

In the edited collection Time Out: Global Perspectives on Sport and the Covid-19 Lockdown, practitioners and international scholars explore the impact of the global Covid-19 health pandemic on sport from a global perspective. It is part of a two-volume Covid-19 and Sport series that tackles the effects of the global lockdown on sport during March and April 2020, when restrictions were at their most severe and the human toll at its peak in many countries. The chapters provide a comprehensive overview on the immediate consequences of the Covid-19 lockdown on sport. This book presents a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives in a total of twenty individual chapters, organized around three main themes. The first section explores the reactions of international stakeholders within the global sport system to the pandemic. In section two, the authors focus on the impact of the Covid-19 crisis on sporting participants within an international context, including effects on both elite athletes and leisure sport participants. The final section includes the impacts on and reactions of individual sports.

History describes the centuries-old animal protection societies that preceded the modern movement that emerged in the 1970s. Cruelty explains what drives activist campaigns against factory farming, vivisection and hunting. Activism analyses the educational and intervention strategies and the varied tactics of animal activists in the USA, the UK and Australia. Perspectives identifies some of the conflicts involving counter movements against the theory and practice of animal rights; the prospect for achieving common cause in resolving the worst features of human-animal interactions is also discussed. The concluding section is in two parts: Part 1 focuses on Pandemics and Life Chances, a topic that is of obvious relevance in the current era while Part 2 features an annotated guide to recommended reading on the four main themes covered in the book.
