Due to the scarcity of surviving texts by other poets, it is easy to forget that Aristophanes wrote for competition and that rivalry was an important component in the rhetoric of his comedies, especially Clouds and Knights . This important study, comprising 26 essays by leading international scholars presented at a conference held at the Institute of Classical Studies in London in 1996, aims to promote a better understanding of Aristophanes' work by assessing that of his many rivals, including Cratinus, Hermippus and Eupolis, who regularly triumphed over Aristophanes at major civic festivals. Thucydides: Man's Place in History

Stahl's classic book on Thucydides is one of the most profound and widely respected modern studies of the Athenian historian. Published in German in 1966 as 'Thukydides: Die Stellung des Menschen im geschichtlichen Prozess', it has, until now, now been available in English. For this new edition, the original has been revised, and enlarged by two chapters which reflect the author's subsequent work. Stahl's achievement is, first, to free Thucydides from the nationalist limits which modern interpreters imposed, then to demonstrate the technique whereby Thucydides constructs his work as an interplay, using narrative to comment on the speeches of politicians, to confirm or, more often, to refute his speakers' analysis.

Dreams and nightmares have long puzzled and fascinated, yet this is the first book to explore such visions in the Ancient Egyptian world. The author traces the evidence from the first half of Egypt's long history, the Old Kingdom through the New Kingdom, a time-span of over 1,000 years. The book is arranged thematically, with chapters devoted to the literary use of dreams, to the political use of divine visions, to the technology used to ward away terrorizing nightmares. It also explores the Ramesside Dream Book, a unique text that reveals the desires and anxieties that could inspire an Egyptian's dreams, with images of sex and power, of gods and the dead. All the relevant passages are conveniently translated in an appendix.

Greek women routinely wore the veil. That is the unexpected finding of this major study. The Greeks, rightly credited with the invention of civic openness, are revealed as also part of a more eastern tradition of seclusion. Llewellyn-Jones' work proceeds from literary and, notably, from iconographic evidence. In sculpture and vase painting it demonstrates the presence of the veil, often covering the head, but also more unobtrusively folded back onto the shoulders. This discreet fashion not only gave a priviledged view of the face to the ancient art consumer, but also, incidentally, allowed the veil to escape the notice of traditional modern scholarship. From Greek literary sources, the author shows that full veiling of the head and face was commonplace. He analyses the elaborate Greek vocabulary for veiling and explores what the veil meant to achieve. He shows that the veil was a conscious extension of the house and was often referred to as "tegidion", literally "a little roof". Veiling was thus an ingeneous compromise; it allowed women to circulate in public while maintaining the ideal of a house-bound existence. Alert to the different types of veil used, the author uses Greek and more modern evidence (mostly from the Arab world) to show how women could exploit and subvert the veil as a means of eloquent, sometimes emotional, communication. First published in 2003, Llewellyn-Jones' book has established itself as a central - and inspiring - text for the study of ancient women.

Ancient Sparta is best known today for its military orientation, the rigorous training of its youth to serve in Greece's most truly "professional" army, and the suppression of its neighbours that made its focus on war both possible and necessary. A Spartan lifestyle proverbially describes austerity; ancient Greek luxury was associated with Ionia and the oriental world. The contributions to this book, first presented at a conference held by the University of Nottingham's Centre for Spartan and Peloponnesian Studies, reverse the stereotype and explore the role of luxury and wealth at Sparta and among its Peloponnesian neighbours from the Iron Age to the Hellenistic period. 
Using literary, archaeological, epigraphic and numismatic evidence, an international team of specialists investigates the definition and changing meanings of the term luxury and its nearest ancient Greek equivalents, providing new insights into Sparta's supposed abstention from luxury, and the way that this was portrayed by ancient writers. They analyse wealth production and private and public spending, emphasising features that were distinctive to Sparta and the Peloponnese compared with other parts of ancient Greece. Other chapters investigate issues still familiar in the contemporary world: economic crisis and debt, austerity measures, and relief provisions for the poor.
