Without a doubt, the past few years have witnessed the emergence on the scene of communication in the ecclesiastical sphere – and elsewhere – the figure of Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, as a voice of both denunciation and appeal, not only with regard to the corruption and cultural and spiritual poverty present in today's ecclesial world, at every level, but also in world society and politics.\nBoth his life story as well as the process by which this revelation has taken place are quite unique. Carlo Maria Viganò is a priest who was directed after his ordination, which took place in 1968 in Pavia, to undertake a diplomatic career. He served as Nuncio to Nigeria, and then as Delegate for the Pontifical Representations in the Secretariat of State (a very delicate task, since the confidential details of the personal dossiers of prelates and bishops passed before his eyes). He was then Secretary for the Governorate of the Vatican City State, and finally Apostolic Nuncio toto Washington, certainly one of the six most prestigious posts for any diplomat, whether in cassock or in civilian dress.\nCertainly those who are sent as Nuncio to the heart of the Empire gain a perspective of extraordinary breadth and depth; it allows one to scrutinize the mechanisms of world power, the obvious motives – and also the hidden ones – which underly choices and decisions. It is from this wealth of experience and knowledge, which very few can boast of, that the recent public presence of Carlo Maria Viganò was born. An entire career and a priestly life spent in the necessary discretion linked to his professional obligations and role was suddenly overturned. In the summer of 2018 – not even four years ago – Archbishop Viganò makes the sensational gesture of revealing cover-up and complicity that allowed then-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick to carry out those abuses that finally led to the condemnations he has suffered.

Father Sergio Ticozzi, a prominent Italian missionary, has produced an important new account of the religious policies of the Chinese Communist government. It is clear from his account that religion has long been a central preoccupation of the Communist government and that it continues to be so today. The government has long engaged not only in suppression of Christian and other religious beliefs but, increasingly, in campaigns to manipulate those beliefs and channel them into serving the political purposes of the state and Party. Striking in his account is how the Chinese Communist Party continues trying to make ideology function as a political religion. This has an old pedigree, going back to the personality cult of Chairman Mao Zedong (Tse-tung). Today’s campaigns appear to be more sophisticated but perhaps equally repressive and futile. Alongside his own personality cult, President and Party General Secretary Xi Jinping’s “eight-point frugality code” ostensibly attempts to control “formalism, bureaucratic behavior, hedonism and extravagance” and to “ensure that workers have clear political beliefs, high professionalism, commitment and discipline.” As others have discovered, these aims can be achieved much more effectively by simply allowing people to choose their own religious beliefs from the marketplace of ideas.

The merciful level of the liturgy and of the music therein in so many of our churches (now a disturbing majority) should indicate that something has gone seriously wrong. Everyone who is “in the know” at the Vatican is aware of the so-called "liturgical wars", that is, the fight between those who believe the liturgical reforms to date have gone too far and those who view them as not having gone far enough. Abuses have become uses, the "presider" has taken center stage as a kind of protagonist, and vulgar and profane music is now common place in many parishes and churches around the world. This illuminates why it is important for us a return to a traditional pedagogy of Gregorian chant, to a repertoire that brings with it the flavor of many centuries of Catholic practice. The time is thus ripe for a book of this sort, a reflection not principally about the technical issues surrounding chant, but on the depth of meaning that Gregorian chant brings to the liturgy. The focus of this book is therefore not about chant by itself, but about chant IN THE liturgy. Given that the two cannot be separated without unreasonable compromise, if one is in crisis the other is as well. It is fitting that this book was written by Professor Giacomo Baroffio, one with extensive monastic experience. His understanding of chant comes not only from "theoretical knowledge" (of which he is well endowed, being considered one of the world’s experts on chant) but also from years of tireless singing, the latter likely being of greater importance (Aurelio Porfiri).
