The Stone Soup Annual brings together the complete versions of every issue of the magazine in 2017, in one publication. In addition to the year's eight edited collections of poetry, stories, art and reviews, the Annual includes bonus materials--blog posts, music and contests--from the year on our website, stonesoup.com. Contributing authors and artists are all aged 8-13 years.
Stone Soup, the magazine by and for kids, has been in print since 1973, publishing the best in children's writing and art. The magazine is now published online eleven times a year--ten monthly editions and one combined summer issue--and in print once a year as the Stone Soup Annual. Online subscribers have access to a twenty-year archive, giving hours of reading pleasure to individual subscribers as well as a deep resource of materials for teachers and home-schoolers. Our unrivalled collection of kids' stories, poems and art is complemented by a series of activities and teaching materials on our website.

There’s something exciting and satisfying about collecting the year’s work, alongside the best from our excellent young bloggers, into one fat tome. Alone, each issue seems small. Together, they are big enough to be a doorstop. You can think of the making of the Stone Soup Annual as being a little like making a pot of stone soup in the kitchen. Each issue, online book review, and blog post are the ingredients. It isn’t until we bring all the issues and a selection of online material into the Annual that we can fully see what the whole year’s Stone Soup turned out to be.
While it’s exciting to hold the year’s material all together in one’s hands and see what a massive body of work it is, what excites us the most about this year’s Annual is the variety and power of what our authors and artists created. There are one-page stories that evoke what we call a “sense of place,” there are long stories that explore what it means to move house and to lose a friend, to bully and to be bullied. There are small poems that take on the meaning of the world, and long poems that describe a single thing. There are contemporary fairytales, and stories that attempt to up-end our idea of the “fairytale.” There are photographs, pastel drawings, paintings, collages, and watercolors. There is a screenplay, a movie review, a couple of self-portraits. From our bloggers, there are book reviews, musical compositions, comics, and essays on a range of subjects.
We hope this book inspires all of you out there—no matter how old you are!—as each piece in it inspired all of us at Stone Soup in 2018.

The stories and poetry in this volume were written by authors between the ages of 11 and 13 and selected for publication in Stone Soup magazine. Since its beginning in 1973, Stone Soup has published art, poetry, and short fiction springing from the imaginations of young writers and artists. For the under-14s, family—or the lack of it—is not only at the center of their world; for the most part, family is their world.In this collection, we encounter all sorts of families: happy families, broken families, extended families, bereaved families, and the non-related families we choose for ourselves. In these tales of summer vacations, sibling relationships, family traditions, moving house or moving country, births, deaths, and “normal” everyday life, these young authors expose a myriad of emotions that we experience along with their characters: joy, anger, jealousy, confusion, unhappiness, amusement—and, above everything, love. The stories represent a quest for, and movement towards, deeper understanding of these various aspects of family life. Be prepared for a read that takes you through the fun of silly games with siblings, the sorrows of bereavement and divorce, the pleasures of bonding with grandparents and carers, and the longing for absent parents–all in the context of some truly creative storytelling. It’s a richly challenging experience.

The 42 stories and poem in this volume were written by authors between the ages of seven and 14, selected for publication in Stone Soup magazine. Since its beginning in 1973, Stone Soup has published art, poetry, and short fiction springing from the imaginations of young writers and artists. It’s hardly surprising that so much of that creativity is devoted to thoughts on friends and friendship.
Friendship has a special place in our lives as we grow up, and the development of friendships is central to so much of our childhood experience. These stories reflect the many ways that friends both create and shape our world, and the depth of feeling those relationships evoke. All kinds of friendships are explored, in all their stages: making friends and losing friends, friendships across generations and distances, new friends, old friends, long-lost friends, enemies who become friends, and friends who become enemies. We are asked to think deeply about what friendship means–what happens when we lie and the impact of a well-timed gesture of kindness, what betrayal feels like, and the familial closeness of true friendship–and, also, simply to revel in the fun and silliness of time spent with friends.
