This important study examines the significance of traditional Native American practices in Pentecostal worship and observes how members of the Native American Contextual Movement integrate these practices. Alexander suggests missiological implications of traditional Native American practices in Pentecostal worship and church life. He addresses the development of the powwow movement and pan-Indianism as an important sociological phenomena paving the way for inter-tribal ministry. He surveys the history of Native American ministries in the Church of God (Cleveland, Tennessee) and traces the development of a pneumatological Pentecostal theology of religions and the use of sacred objects in Pentecostalism. By using participant observation, personal interviews, and case studies, Alexander investigates examples of active contextualization and discovers how contextualized traditional practices enhance Native Pentecostal worship and mission. The study focuses on six traditional practices that are being contextualized in Native Pentecostal churches: language, smudging, drums and rattles, dance, talking circles, and ceremony. Alexander argues that implementing these contextualized practices in Pentecostal worship reduces syncretism and moves people closer to God.

In this book, noted local Civil War historian, Gerald L. Augustus offers a fresh and comprehensive analysis of the Battle of Campbell’s Station. Relying on primary sources, newly constructed maps, and his own keen knowledge of the battle terrain, Augustus provides an almost hour by hour accounting of the decisions, movements, and encounters that made up this significant battle. Along the way, he includes three excurses that provide helpful background for understanding the battle as well as its consequences in human terms, and three appendices that provide the order of the battle, as well as casualties for both Union and Confederate Armies. This mid-November 1863 drama involved Union General Ambrose Burnside with some 5,000 men desperately trying to retreat to Knoxville from opposite Loudon, Tennessee. In close pursuit was Confederate General James Longstreet with nearly 12,000 troops intent on either capturing or destroying Burnside’s immediate command and then recapturing Knoxville. Burnside would win the race to junction of Kingston Road and Lenoirs Road, but the fighting known as the Battle of Campbell’s Station would move eastward for over two miles and last from about 9.00 am until after dark. Burnside’s forces would again slip into the dark and continue on to Knoxville and successfully defend the city until reinforcements arrived.

The idea of being both ‘Native’ and ‘Christian’ has been especially challenging among American Indians. Indian people have endured five hundred years of colonial dominance and the results have left divisions between those who are traditionalists, keeping to the old ways, and those who are progressives, embracing the new. Since the mid-1990s there has been a resurgence among Indian evangelicals who wish to break down the ‘identity crisis’ related to being Native and Christian. Native Christians are encouraging other Natives to meet somewhere in the middle of traditionalism and progressivism. Eric Bates addresses the question of Native American identity, a question that has been problematic among both Native Americans and non-Indians. Blood quantum as an indicator of Indigenous identity has led to constructions of different levels of Indianness. Pan-Indianism has brought together Native peoples from a variety of tribal backgrounds and has formed a new sense of collective identity as Indians versus tribal affiliations. Using situational analysis, Bates examines contextualized ministry via a Native Christian conference which allows Christian Indians to express their Indianness by wearing Native regalia, using Indigenous instruments, and employing other forms of Native expression.
