This crowd of artists, as exuberant as this collection's title, were recruited for a mini-survey of contemporary art based on the diversity of their approaches and practices, which the editors saw as representative. Their work in a variety of media from film and video to painting and installation is informed by everyday life, and addresses issues such as ecology, technology, popular culture and globalization. The pieces gathered here include a mix of key moments in conceptual art and newly commissioned works, sourced from the artists' studios and from international collections. Contributors include Liam Gillick, Carsten Höller, Douglas Gordon, Rirkrit Tiravanija, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Jorge Pardo, Sarah Morris, Cerith Wyn Evans, Sarah Lucas, Anri Sala, Doug Aitken, Jim Lambie, Paola Pivi, Carles Congost and Eva Rothschild, and their work appears alongside pieces from the estates of Alighiero e Boetti and Bas Jan Ader. With texts from Liam Gillick and Kurt Vonnegut, among others.

New York brings together painter Alex Katz's most striking images of his hometown and the dear friends with which he made it his own. Coming of age during the triumph of the New York School of painting, Katz synthesized its influences with wide-ranging interests shared by many of the New York School poets. Of the more than 40 paintings and aquatints gathered here, many depict that distinguished circle, as well as the iconic skyline where they changed the world. Katz is best known as a painter of people, and the wide cross-section of portraits here demonstrates the variety he brings to the genre, along with dramatic variations in scale, abrupt cropping and subtle artifices such as luxuriant backdrops that turn out to be earlier Katz paintings. Along with an essay and interview, New York includes an extraordinary selection of poems from friends of the artist, including some of the most important American poets of the late twentieth century, among them Frank O'Hara, Kenneth Koch, John Ashbery and Robert Creeley. Katz was born in Brooklyn in 1927 and studied at the Cooper Union and Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. His work has been the subject of nearly 200 international solo exhibitions.

Shahzia Sikander

Over the past 17 years, Shahzia Sikander has worked within the tradition of Indo-Persian miniature painting--creating a dialogue with a traditional form of art while engaging in a transformative task. Over the years, she has built a practice which seeks to understand miniature painting's historical significance as well as its contemporary relevance. This artist's book, which features many paper changes, gatefolds and a die-cut cover, brings the reader through Sikander's practice, which now embraces various media, from drawing and painting to animation. It accompanies Sikander's first major solo museum exhibition in Europe--at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin--and provides an overview of her work up to 2006. It features essays by the noted Harvard cultural theorist Homi Bhabha and the exhibition curator and noted writer on Modern and contemporary art, Sean Kissane.

As one of the best regarded artists working in India, Nalini Malani is famous both for her paintings and for video and shadow-play installations that reveal a deep commitment to the subcontinent. She was born in Karachi in 1946, before the partition of Pakistan from India, and was forced to flee her hometown, along with her family, as a refugee. After stops in Calcutta and Poona, Malani settled in Bombay (current-day Mumbai), where she has lived and worked since 1958. There she has developed a new position for female Indian artists which has made her an icon for the country's younger generation. Her provocative works have been shown extensively in solo exhibitions, including one at the New Museum in New York, and in group contexts such as Tate Modern and the 2005 and 2007 Venice Bienniales. This substantial monograph, designed in collaboration with the artist, offers Malani's latest paintings and installations, as well as an illustrated biography.

"People thought we were just Victorian queens who wanted to make little kitten paintings on pillows and be kitschy," quipped Peter McGough, one half of the collaborative duo McDermott &amp; McGough, as he reminisced about the East Village art scene in the 1980s--where the artists met and honed their inimitable style--in a 2003 Artforum interview with Bob Nickas. The artists have since become known for their performative fusion of art and life--namely dressing like Victorian dandies 24 hours a day and embracing archaic photographic techniques such as palladium, gum, salt and cyanotype printing. They are not escapists, however, as Roberta Smith has pointed out. "The allusions to turn-of-the-century dandyism are combined with often explicit references to homoeroticism and to the artists' own sexuality. The implication is that the moral hypocrisies of the Victorian era are still in effect today." Featuring more than 120 images, this volume, released on the occasion of McDermott &amp; McGough's retrospective exhibition at The Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin examines two decades worth of the team's photographic work and includes texts by Matthew Higgs, Director of White Columns in New York, and Séan Kissane, Curator of Exhibitions at The IMMA, Dublin.

This publication--at once a daybook, a survey (it accompanies the artist's first exhibition in Ireland) and an artist's book--collects eight previous publications on the American artist Jack Pierson, several of which are long out of print. Pierson was among the first photographers to print pages with the imagery bleeding out of its usual white frame, and to deploy a bleached-out and overexposed style of photography that connotes a longing for a recent but already dimming past, littered with the props and players of yesterday's parties. By small increments, an emotional tone builds that is both warmly homoerotic and unabashedly wistful. All of these books were designed by the artist and are here reproduced in their original size and in chronological order. Jack Pierson makes photographs, word sculptures, installations, drawings and artist's books that excavate the emotional undercurrents of everyday life, from the intimacy of romantic attachment to the remote idolizing of the famous. Pierson has often engaged celebrity culture, refusing ironic treatment of the subject to instead confess, or seem to confess, his own attraction to the fantasy life depicted in his artworks. He has had recent solo exhibitions at Cheim &amp; Read, New York; Alison Jacques Gallery, London and Regen Projects, Los Angeles. His work is held in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Juxtaposing the work of a selection of international contemporary artists such as William Kentridge, Kara Walker, Lotte Reiniger, Jockum Nordström and Nathalie Djurberg with the tradition of European shadow theater--particularly as it is practiced in Turkey and Greece, where it is still very much an active art form--this volume examines the historical use of shadows in art. Shadow theater is an oral tradition, based on folk tales and simple narratives expressed with an economy of means, that operates, in large part, on improvisation. It has served as a source of inspiration for a number of contemporary artists who have paid homage and appropriated the aesthetics of shadow plays in their work. Published in conjunction with an exhibition of the same name at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), Dublin, which will travel to Istanbul and Athens. This volume includes essays by critic Lewis Hyde, IMMA Director Enrique Juncosa and exhibition curator Paolo Colombo. This project has been funded with support from the European Commission.
