Fanny's story, pulsing with humanity and not infrequently moving, merits a wide readership on its own account. This is the most heartfelt and enjoyable work I have read from this author. It is impossible not to be captivated by his love of his subject... All preachers ought to buy this book, but no one will read it without spiritual profit.

Richard Baxter (1615-91) was one of the leading Puritan divines and the author of devotional classics such as The Saints' Everlasting Rest (1650). His famous ministry to the people of Kidderminster was marked by a deep and spontaneous human sympathy; he saw people suffer and his soul wept. None, said Baxter, should perish for want of hearing that Christ died for them. In his address to the Puritan Conference in 1959, Dr D. Martvn Lloyd-Jones was certain that when we speak of Baxter at Kidderminster 'we are entitled to speak of revival'. In his informative and provocative portrait, Alan Clifford places Baxter in the social and intellectual milieu of his age. He evokes the drama of the Civil War and examines Baxter's support for the Parliamentary cause. At the same time he offers a muscular dissection of his subject's theology. Dr Clifford asks whether the denigration of Baxter - even to the present day - is a result of valid judgements on the man and his thought, or the product of a skewed understanding. As he did in his acclaimed study of the Welsh preacher John Jones Talsarn, Dr Clifford shows himself freely in his book. If the evangelical renewal of the late 1950s had favoured Baxter over John Owen, he writes: 'Evangelism would have been warmer and less inhibited, holiness more evidently fruitful, and biblical church unity more fervently pursued'. The work which you hold in your hand is priceless. It is priceless not because it is intrinsically more valuable than any other great work of the seventeenth century or beyond, or because it is a free book to you the interested reader—you have paid an exact, fair price in acquiring this copy no doubt—but this text is priceless rather because not everybody gets a second chance to be heard in this lifetime. For most of us, God grants a short season in this life in which we find our usefulness for His kingdom and then, well, we expire; sadly, most of us will be unreservedly forgotten after we leave this earth. Our ideas, our works, our impact in our generation, and our voices are extinguished for the ages when we die. Forgotten, we are relegated to the annals of history, and then most of the world will never know we even existed. However, this is not always true! For some, for those that God would use to be a voice of change and hope for many generations after them, their voices, though faint, are still heard. This is the case with Moses Amyraut (French spelling is Moïse Amyraut), a seventeenth century (1596-1664) Frenchman whose voice carries on today with a message as relevant as the day he penned it. 
From the biographical outline
Amyraut is chiefly remembered for setting the cat among the pigeons over the theology of predestination. When a Roman Catholic nobleman – otherwise sympathetic to the Reformed Faith – expressed doubts about what he perceived to be Calvin’s teaching, Amyraut responded with his first work on the subject. However, his Brief Treatise on Predestination (1634)# aroused the wrath of the Reformed world when he expounded a position on election, the extent of the atonement and ‘universal grace’ at odds with accepted wisdom. Starting what Bayle described as a ‘kind of civil war among the Protestant divines of France’, it soon became clear that Amyraut – heavily influenced by Calvin – was pursuing a very different theological agenda from ‘orthodox’ theologians like the ‘French John Owen’ Pierre du Moulin, but one that was not exposed to many of the biblical objections raised by many then and subsequently.

In the decade following Martin Luther’s nailing of his ninety-five theses to the door of the castle church of Wittenberg in 1517, the phenomenon of social and religious change known as the Reformation made rapid inroads across a spiritually-starved Europe. In England the nursing mother of this new movement was the University of Cambridge. The most brilliant scholars of their generation, men like Robert Barnes and John Frith, were called to resistance and reform by the rule of truth they found in the inscripturated Word of God. To these early makers of the English Protestant tradition the rediscovery of a gracious God and a saving Christ meant more than the established order of Christendom. By the end of the 1530s, however, Henry VIII had begun to move away from the path of religious reform. The Act of Six Articles (1539) defined in thoroughly orthodox terms the doctrinal form of the English Church. Far worse was to follow. After the death of Edward VI – ‘the young Josiah’ – in July 1553, Mary I set about restoring every aspect of Rome’s dominion. In forty-five months between February 1555 and November 1558, nearly 300 Reformed Christians were burned alive. It is doubtful whether any university in Europe suffered more than Cambridge for pitting the Word of God, unadulterated and unabbreviated, against the customs and decrees of the medieval church.
