Hawthorne’s talent for descriptive writings was never exercised on a happier theme than the Old Manse in Concord, Massachusetts. Built in 1765 by Ralph Waldo Emerson’s grandfather, it was Emerson’s temporary home for three different periods. Emerson wrote his "Nature" in the small back room on the second story, looking out upon the river, the North Bridge and the battlefield. When Hawthorne married Sophia Peabody in July 1842, they took up their abode in the Old Manse. Here they passed three years in idyllic happiness.

An essay on plantation life and the Old South as remembered by one of Virginia’s finest writers. In the introduction to this volume, Thomas Nelson Page states that his purpose is to correct the picture of Southern life portrayed by Harriet Beecher Stowe and by the post-Reconstruction writings of the 1880s.The result is a charming essay of plantation life. Originally published in 1892 as a chapter in his book The Old South: Essays Social and Political, this edition is a reprint of the edition of 1897, where this essay was published by itself along with it own introduction and illustrations. Thomas Nelson Page (1853-1922), a native of Virginia, wrote extensively about the Old South, including several novels, and biographies of Robert E. Lee and Thomas Jefferson. From 1913 to 1919, he was US Ambassador to Italy.

From his own admission we have learned that he started life near Boston in 1774.The first independent record of him notes his arrival in 1801, in what is now Licking County, Ohio, with a horseload of appleseeds. He also brought with him his ardent belief in the teachings of Emmanuel Swedenborg, and he spent the rest of his life spreading the gospel of this Christian mystic with an imaginative lending library plan. His mission had him continuously traversing western Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana planting and caring for his beloved apple trees. Johnny Appleseed died in 1847 near Fort Wayne.There is a monument to his memory in South Park, Mansfield, Ohio.

James R. Durand served on three American war vessels, including the USS Constitution (Old Ironsides), was taken prisoner of war, and then impressed into the British Navy. For seven years he served under that foreign flag and during the War of 1812, aboard the British frigate Narcissus, he refused to obey orders to take part in the bombardment of Stonington, Connecticut, where he had relatives. He was almost hanged. The journal ends with Durand’s release from the British Navy and return to his home, Milford, Connecticut.
