This is the story of the man who caused more destruction among enemy submarines than was achieved by any other officer of the British or other Allied navies. That man was F. J. Walker who commanded the Second Support Group until July 1944 when he tragically died following a stroke. With the increase in U-boat activity against Atlantic convoys Churchill ordered the joint Chiefs of Staff to come up with plans to combat this hidden menace. Both the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force Coastal Command soon established Anti-Submarine units with Walker, then a commander, being put in charge of two anti-submarine groups that would provide escort ships for convoys in the Atlantic Ocean. Walker’s hunting and destroying operations against the U-boats proved successful and soon became the scourge of Germany’s submarine commanders. The author, after serving as Walker’s second-in-command, took over the Group during the Battle of the Atlantic. This book deals with the loss of thirty-five U-boats during the winter of 1943/44. As the season started the large wolf-packs, hunting with their new homing torpedoes, were a force to be reckoned with. But gradually their successes became less and less as the Allies, reading the German naval signals, diverted the convoys around the waiting packs. Many U-boats returned to port with their torpedoes unfired. Early in 1944 the packs were cut down in number. Groups of three, and then later only single boats, were given the task of locating and attacking Atlantic convoys. These thirty-five U-boats, some with very impressive records, were lost either by combined sea and air attacks, by sea-based and land-based aircraft, by striking a mine, or through accidents. United States Navy and Army aircraft registered successes as did American, British and Canadian warships. Giving a balanced view, this book traces the buildup of the wolf-packs as well as their rundown. It contains many fascinating stories, some of which would be considered too outlandish by writers of fiction, yet tell of true incidents involving the roaming wolf-packs.

At 7:30am on July 1st, 1916, fourteen British divisions climbed out of their trenches along an eighteen-mile front north of the Somme and marched slowly forward, each man carrying sixty-six pounds of kit, in wave after wave of extended lines, steadily on towards the German defenses. They expected to find the enemy barbed wire, trench systems, artillery and defenders all annihilated by the week-long preliminary bombardment by 1,350 guns. Instead they were massacred by German artillery and machine guns, first as they plodded across no-man’s-land and then as they bunched to struggle through such gaps as existed in the often uncut barbed wire. By the end of the day no fewer than 57,000 men had fallen, 19,000 of them killed, and without gaining a lodgment in the German defenses, except on the right of the line next to the five French divisions also taking part in the offensive. A catastrophe without parallel in British history, this first day on the Somme still continues to provoke ferocious indictments of Sir Douglas Haig and his subordinates. Undoubtedly they committed errors of judgment tragic in their consequences, even if the errors are more easily perceived with hindsight. But the causes of the catastrophe are to be found as much in circumstance as in the mistakes of the British high command.
