U-boat 977 was the German submarine that escaped to Argentina at the end of World War Two. This epic journey started from Bergen in Norway, where in April 1945 it was temporarily based, and took three and a half months to complete. Because of continuing allied naval activity the commander decided to make the first part of the journey underwater. Before surfacing near the west coast of Africa U-977 had spent a remarkable sixty-six days submerged! It was inevitable that when U-977’s journey and escape to Argentina and its port of Mar del Plata became known it would be the center of rumor and theory. Why did U-977 make this long journey of escape when, for Germany, the war was over? Was it because it was carrying Nazi gold to continue the fight? Were escaping Nazi leaders on board? Heinz Schaeffer, the commander of U-977, has written a full account of his earlier career that culminated in this last command. It depicts the grueling aspects of a submariner’s life aboard a vessel that was subjected to the harsh conditions of the seas and oceans. As an experienced commander Schaeffer took part in many of the decisive U-boat operations in the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean. Inspired by a photograph taken during an emergency landing at an airfield near the author’s home, this is an account of the life and death of the Flying Fortress called ‘Lightning Strikes’ 42-3073, from its construction in a factory in California in late 1942 to its loss in the skies above Germany just over a year later. Having survived a crash landing, and several times shot-up in action, ‘073 finally fell to the guns of Focke-Wulf Fw 190 fighters on the second day of ‘Big Week’, the war’s heaviest series of bombing raids, in which the Allies inflicted fatal damage on the Luftwaffe. It is also a tribute to the fifteen crews who flew in ‘Lightning Strikes’ at various times during her career, of which only one crew survived intact to complete their tour. Focusing on the story of the airplane itself rather than a particular crew, the author has obtained first-hand combat accounts from seven of ‘073’s former pilots, bombardiers and gunners, with contributions from other veterans of the 401st Bombardment Squadron with which she served, and additional material from a number of relevant literary and personal sources. As part of the celebrated 91st Bomb Group based at Bassingbourn in Cambridgeshire, ‘073 and her sister-ships took part in some of the most momentous missions of the US Eighth Air Force, and her career spanned the critical phase of the daylight bomber offensive. Many of the technical and tactical developments which shaped ‘073’s operational career are included in the narrative, as are aspects of the character and ethos of the wartime aviators, and their impact upon the civilian communities they were stationed among.

By the end of 1942 Britain had lost many large ships at sea. Ark Royal, Barham, Courageous, Duchess of Atholl, Eagle, Empress of Britain, Orcades, Strathallan, Viceroy of India and Warwick Castle had all been torpedoed and sunk. In every case the U-boat commander returned to base to tell the tale. In most cases the victim was well protected by escorts and the odds against the U-boat's subsequent escape had been heavy. Each of the stories in this book is different in character, each has a dramatic tale to tell.
