In the depths of pushcha, an ancient woodland, Ignat the beekeeper tends bees in beehives up in the trees, just as his father, grandfather, and their forefathers did. People say that Ignat gets everything he needs from the forest, that he knows every backwood and passage in the pushcha, that he talks with animals and trees… Even though Ignat lives in a world outside time, does not know and wishes not to know what year it is, the course of history does not slow down. The peaceful life according to old lore is abruptly interrupted. Pushcha falls into the hands of new owners who see the forest only as a source of income from selling thousands of pine and oak trees. However, Ignat will not rest until the slightest chance remains to save the forest and preserve the thousand-year-old tradition. It is his pushcha.

The Locomotive, by Julian Tuwim, is one the most famous Polish poems for children. Designer Ma� ‚gorzata Gurowska and journalist Joanna Ruszczyk present its graphic and literary reinterpretation for adults. Tuwimâ€™s poem stimulates the imagination with a description of contents in wagons of a train sitting at a station. Although the poet is remembered today primarily as the author of poetry for children, he is also renowned as a satirist who critically described the political-social reality of his time. Gurowska and Ruszczyk, in The Locomotive/IDEOLO, make reference to Tuwimâ€™s social awareness and frequently uncompromising stance, using the text of his poem as a framework for presenting their own position concerning the situation in present-day. In their version, the railway wagons are full of Jews, aggressive football fans, soldiers, gays and lesbians, animals, as well as inanimate objects. It is all accompanied by political commentary, summarizing inequality and social injustice. In this way, the authors challenge not only Polish reality with difficult questions about national identity, racism, anti-Semitism, and attitudes towards ecology and animals.

The events in this book are based on a true story. In the early noughties, it emerged that two German police officers had been members of a Ku Klux Klan spin-off group operating in the German state of Baden-WÃ¼rttemberg. During questioning as part of a later police investigation, the two officers refuted accusations of racism, claiming that they had joined the Klan solely to meet new people, particularly those of the opposite sex. Whilst under interrogation, they also complained about the Klanâ€™s initiation ceremony, which took place in a forest and was allegedly poorly organised. Both officers were subjected to disciplinary action but, due to their supposed naÃ¯vetÃ©, they were allowed to keep their jobs in the German police force.

The subject of emigration affects every Polish person. If not directly, then through family and friends. Now anyone can be an emigrant, from a mechanic to a violinist. They can keep in touch with relatives on Skype, shop in a Polish shop, wait for their first payment in pounds or euros. These things have become a generational experience. The blog Na emigracji. takes this universal theme. It has been maintained since October 2013 and watched by more than 10,000 fans. By using a style reminiscent of comic illustration it relates the trials and tribulations of immigrants who have decided to move to the British Isles. The minimalist watercolors are enriched with text (both in Polish and English), used to highlight or outline the nuances of common experiences and unexpected situations faced by a Pole outside Poland. They are frequently comical â€“ either through laying bare prevailing stereotypes (on both sides) or through making wry observations of cultural differences. The blog has strong autobiographical themes and is partially a documentation. Itâ€™s a little report, a diary and above all an artistic record of experiences in which millions of Polish emigrants and their relatives can see reflections of themselves.

Although it is directed mainly at younger readers, it refers to serious events. Sir Paul Neal in the seventeenth century â€“ one of the astronomers of the Royal Society â€“ is supposed to have been the first to observe an elephant on the moon. At the time, his discovery provoked much confusion and fired the imaginations of many writers. Thanks to Samuel Butlerâ€™s satirical account, the story reached France. Fontaine himself wrote a tale about it â€“ â€œUn animal dans la lune.â€ Almost 350 years later Gosia Herba and Miko� ‚aj Pasi� „ski have come back to this story of the moon, and out of it they have spun a new tale full of adventure.
