Although grammatical agreement or concord is widespread in human languages, linguistic theorists have generally treated agreement phenomena as secondary or even marginal. All the papers in this volume, however, take agreement phenomena seriously, as presenting either a general issue in theory construction or a descriptive problem in particular types of languages. The theoretical perspectives range from purportedly theory-neutral typological frameworks to assumptions about the validity of one or another current formal model. Further, the degree of generality ranges from a universalist nature-of-human-language agenda to concern with one or another aspect of grammatical agreement or with agreement in a single language or language group.

This volume of working papers emerged from a workshop on Morphology/Syntax/Discourse Interactions held in the summer of 1985 at the Center for the Study of Language and Information, Stanford University. The central objective of the workshop was to discover how the overall linguistics architecture must be structured to explain the kinds of interactions between morphological, syntactic, and discourse phenomena that are empirically found to occur. The papers included in the volume are refined and augmented versions of the material originally presented in the workshop and deal with different aspects of interactions between syntax and other subsystems of the grammar.

While the semantics of 'pure' lisp is well understood, the same cannot be said for the lisp that people actually use, due to the presence of so-called 'destructive operations' in programs, operations like RPLACA and RPLACD that destructively manipulate data. Such destructive operations have caused considerable difficulty in bridging the gap between theory program verification, and program transformation. In this book, Ian A. Mason aims at squaring theory with practice by first developing a theory that respects practice and then improving practice within this theory. Mason's theory is based on a new notion of memory structure that is adequate to model such destructive operations. Within this framework, he investigates various equivalence relations between expressions in first order lisp. This fragment of lisp includes the destructive operations of RPLACA and RPLACD. Mason then defines some important equivalence relations in lisp programs within this model theoretic framework. Throughout the work, Mason makes a distinction between intensional relations and extensional relations.
