The essays in the book come from architects, economists, philosophers, and a poet, reflecting a diverse array of opinions on and approaches to the treatment of values and valuation.

Architects are rarely invited into the theological debate the way scientists often and artists sometimes are, this despite the obvious analogies between design and Design. Even when they are designing places of worship, the shape of their own faith is given no special place, nor the theological implications of what they are doing regardless of faith. (Indeed, mention "architecture" and "religion" or "God" in the same sentence, and the mind automatically flips to churchs and synagogues, and then to fifty cliche forms.) The idea behind this volume was to blaze a new trail in thinking rationally about religion, theology, and everyday life. It opens, new avenues of debate and discussion about the meaning of religious faith in the 21st century. For not only architects, of course, but also film-makers, writers, composers, painters, scientists, institution-builders, and inventors create-design-with similar if not the same ethical constraints and incentives. The desire of everyman to be creatively involved in life is, we submit, an essentially religious desire. Understanding why and how this is so through architecture might make this clearer to all, and more realizable.

Buildings are inert objects, but our experience of them transcends the physical realm and extends into our deepest consciousness. Architecture, in particular, which moves beyond mere building, strives to enhance the human condition and promote emotional well-being through the manipulation of space, light, material, and form. Psychoanalysis is concerned with many things, among them, the means by which places enter our psyches and become a part of who we are. Both psychoanalysts and architects care about people's identities and memories, hopes and dreams. These human constructs are replete with spatial, architectural images, images of safety, danger, permanence, enclosure, and reflection, as well as with a full range of emotions. Within the overlap of psychoanalytic and architectural discourses lies the emotional tonus of real and imagined places, whether at the scale of the city or the scale of the house, and it is this area of mutual concern that inspired the current volume of CENTER.

While it is necessary for buildings to house and shelter the programs that define them, architecture is significant when it ennobles those institutions through intellectual and emotional engagement with the people who occupy it. Buildings can give measure to one's place in the world; they provide insight and perspective. The Poetry Foundation is such a building. Accordingly, Centerline 9: The Poetry Foundation seeks to give the reader a palpable sense of the feeling of the place. With an emphasis on the physical and the phenomenal, the myriad images, drawings, sketches, and texts presented here are an attempt to give the reader access to those qualities there that are so compelling and worthwhile, and to set out a thesis that architecture is fundamentally about the built, physical artifact in relation to the broad conditions of its setting, program, and inhabitation.

As a viewer wanders through the Gardens of Versailles, she perceives a continually unfolding spectacle: each element relating to the next in a sophisticated way and impacted by the chosen path, time of day, and season. Creating this series of drawings combined Rosner's interests in space, color, form, line, and landscape. The drawings are speculations about an existing place and its potential for abstraction.

CENTER 21: The Secret Life of Buildings employs the nascent philosophies of speculative realism and object-oriented ontology to illuminate architecture as a peculiar set of objects, phenomena, relations, materials, and operations. Object-oriented ontology (OOO) is a philosophy that considers all objects (virtual or physical, large or small, singular or plural, closed or open) to be on equal ontological footing. Although it doesn't exclude humans, it treats them as just another set of objects. This volume explores OOO's significance to architecture, and possibly vice versa.
