Considered one of the most innovative experimental architects working today, Lebbeus Woods combines an extraordinary mastery of drawing with a penetrating analysis of architectural and urban form that is fed by his wide knowledge of fields ranging from philosophy to cybernetics. The resulting work is grounded in real-world conditions at the same time as it pushes far beyond the boundaries of conventional architecture; Woods' passionate provocations argue for a critical engagement with the world that opens it to tectonic possibility, not simply bricks-and-mortar resolution. Unlike rather cursory recent treatments of Woods' work, Experimental Architecture provides a variety of contexts for it. Tracey Myers' essay situates Woods within the long tradition of the architectural visionary, defining that term and incorporating an interview with Woods as a way of understanding his seemingly dichotomous sensibility. In his own essay, Woods traces the evolution of his conviction that it is architecture's responsibility to respond to changes that affect the human condition, and that this agility requires not only formal innovation, but the invention of new kinds of space. Karsten Harries examines Woods within the context of a tension he perceives within contemporary culture between the real and the imaginary.

When Andrew Carnegie founded the Carnegie Museum of Art, his goal was to introduce the people of Pittsburgh to paintings by modern American and European artists. His vision for developing the collection program centered on purchases from an annual exhibition of modern art, now known as the Carnegie International. First held in 1896, the exhibition is the longest running survey of recent art in North America. What was modern then is contemporary in 2004, and the 54th Carnegie International promises to fulfill the exhibition's long-standing tradition of assembling the best contemporary art from around the world . A large-format, fully illustrated exhibition catalogue accompanies this tightly conceived exhibition of interrelated projects grouped around three small monographic exhibitions. These three exhibitions present the work of artists whose lengthy and influential oeuvres serve as touchstones for the larger exhibition. Catalogue entries prepared by a variety of writers with curatorial or critical expertise document the work of 40 artists from all over the world. The artists range in age from 28 to 80 and work in diverse media, including painting, sculpture, installation, performance, film, video, animation, and ceramics. (Artists will be announced in June 2004.) Each artist will be presented through a short essay accompanied by a three-page spread of color images, as well as comprehensive biographical and bibliographic information. The catalogue features an introduction by Laura Hoptman, curator, and expanded essays on three artists will punctuate the book.

The most complete monograph dedicated to the work of Michael Maltzan and his Los Angeles-based architecture practice, this book presents 16 of Maltzan's most recent projects with full-color photographs, drawings and plans. Maltzan is an architect who deals with the realities of urban landscape through the manipulation of ground, circulation and perception. Among his best-known projects is MoMA QNS, Maltzan's reworking of a former factory into a temporary accommodation for the Museum of Modern Art, which opened in Queens, New York, in June 2002. Projects currently in design or under construction include several innovative residences in California, the Fresno Metropolitan Museum and Kidspace Children's Museum, Pasadena, which was selected for the 2002 Venice Biennale International Exhibition of Architecture. Maltzan is quickly gaining increasing international recognition for his work, with projects in China, Canada and Milan.

Venice has been a preeminent glass center since the sixteenth century, and for more than 500 years European factories and designers have tried to emulate the city's success by adapting or copying designs and techniques associated with the Venetian masters. Since the 1950s, American artists and designers have also looked to Venice for inspiration, traveling there to immerse themselves in traditional glass factory environments and working directly with Venetian masters. As the 1960s Studio Glass movement burgeoned and flourished, Venetian masters also began to travel to the United States, not only to teach but also to learn. A stimulating and exciting dialogue was born, which continues to this day. This volume examines the critical links between Venetian and American artists. This volume presents more than 1,000 exemplary twentieth-century Japanese woodblock prints, from the collection of Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh. Taken together, the collection reflects the stylistic movements, aesthetic directions and historic changes of the past century, with particular emphasis on two significant movements: sosakuhanga (creative prints), represented by in-depth selections by Hiratsuka Un'ichi, Onchi Koshiro and Munakata Shiko; and shin-hanga (new prints), with works by Kawase Hasui and Hashiguchi Goyo. Carnegie Museum of Art also possesses several complete series of prints produced in such limited numbers that they are rarely seen today, including One Hundred Views of New Tokyo created between 1929 and 1932. Are we alone in the universe? Do aliens exist? Or are we, ourselves, the strangers in our own worlds? Conceived around the title Life on Mars, the 2008 Carnegie International, curated by Douglas Fogle, explores the increasingly relevant yet perplexing proposition of what it means to be human in the world today. The question, "Is there life on Mars?" is a rhetorical one, posing a metaphorical quest to explore humanity's response to a world where global events challenge and seem to threaten our everyday existence. Working in a range of media, from micro to macro levels of experience, from tragedy to comedy, the 40 artists from 17 countries in the exhibition explore the alien inside each of us. They include Doug Aitken, Kai Althoff, Vija Celmins, Bruce Conner, Peter Fischli and David Weiss, Daniel Guzmán, Mike Kelley, Barry McGee, Wilhelm Sasnal, David Shrigley, Rudolf Stingel, Paul Thek, Wolfgang Tillmans and Andro Wekua, among others. In questioning the absurdity of our lives while demonstrating hopeful aspirations for the future of humankind, these artists foreground the poetic over the monumental and the intimate over the heroic. In the end, the exhibition asks if we ourselves are already on Mars.

Life on Mars: 55th Carnegie International

Carnegie Museum of Art is renowned for its collection of decorative arts and design objects. This volume presents, for the first time, the collection's highlights, from early porcelain to Arts and Crafts furniture to contemporary turned wood. More than 100 illustrated entries detail almost 200 European and American objects from the 1750s to the present. Included are ceramics, furniture, metalwork and glass by noteworthy designers and manufacturers, such as Meissen, Tiffany, Herter Brothers, Marcel Breuer, Peter Voulkos and Ron Arad.
