In 1954, the three-hundredth anniversary of the Pereiaslav Treaty between Russia and Ukraine was celebrated with unprecedented fervour throughout the Soviet Union. The event was resurrected ostensibly to justify the position of Ukrainians within the Soviet Union as a "younger brother" of the Russian people. What actually happened at Pereiaslav? Did the Ukrainians accept the tsar as their sovereign? Or was it rather a treaty among equals, soon to be broken by the Russian side? The issues have been obscured by ideology, partial reporting, and the absence of documentation.  Dr. Basarab gives the most thorough examination of the interpretations of Pereiaslav to date. Danylo Shumuk, a Ukrainian from the Volhynia region, was at one point Amnesty International's most "senior" prisoner of conscience, having been incarcerated in various prisons and labour camps for almost thirty-seven years. Life Sentence is his autobiography. 
It describes the author's early life and his involvement with the communist movement under Polish rule. After the Soviet invasion of Western Ukraine in the autumn of 1939, Shumuk became disillusioned with communism. During the war, he joined the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, which was engaged in a struggle to drive both German and Soviet occupants from Ukrainian soil. But in 1945, he was captured by Soviet troops and sentenced to death (later commuted to life imprisonment). 
Life Sentence gives a vivid portrayal of camp life: the factions, the intrigues and the unprecedented challenge to the Soviet authorities that was mounted by the strike in the Norilsk area in 1953. Throughout the book, the character of Shumuk shines through. He remains a symbol of defiant challenge to a totalitarian regime.

Ukrainian-Jewish Relations in Historical Perspective is a rich collection of twenty-three papers from the 1983 conference on Ukrainian-Jewish relations held at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario. The essays in this unique volume reflect the dynamic and often controversial nature of the conference and cover the period from the seventh century to the present day, both in Eastern Europe and Canada. The Literary Discussion of the 1920s was a pivotal event in Ukrainian intellectual history, one whose significance reaches far beyond issues of literary form and style. An expression of cultural self-assertion, it produced a vigorous debate on issues fundamental to Ukraine's future as a modern nation: its right to exist, its relationship to Russia and Europe, and its sense of identity.

The Holodomor Reader is a wide-ranging collection of key texts and source materials, many of which have never before appeared in English, on the genocidal famine (Holodomor) of 1932-33 in Soviet Ukraine. The subject is introduced in an extensive interpretive essay, and the material is presented in six sections: scholarship; legal assessments, findings, and resolutions; eyewitness accounts and memoirs; survivor testimonies, memoirs, diaries, and letters; Soviet, Ukrainian, British, German, Italian, and Polish documents; and works of literature. In the first half of the twentieth century, Christianity in Europe faced an unprecedented range of social, economic, and political issues that challenged the very essence of the faith. In response to the rise of socialism, the struggle for political self-determination, and the competing totalitarianisms of Soviet communism and German fascism, some of Europe's finest theological minds sought to interpret the social message of the gospel in order to promote a specifically Christian understanding of ideals such as justice, liberty, and democratization. History of Ukraine-Rus', volume 7, The Cossack Age to 1625 inaugurates the History's subseries entitled "The History of the Ukrainian Cossacks". It focuses on the history of the Ukrainian Cossacks from their origins in the fifteenth century to their rise as an important military, social, and political force in the first decades of the seventeenth century. Hrushevsky examines the early history of the Cossacks in the context of Ukrainian colonization of the steppe and the extensive social changes taking place on the Ukrainian frontier. He discusses the causes and consequences of the Cossack anti-Polish uprisings of the period and investigates the interconnections between Cossackdom and the Ukrainian national, religious, and cultural revival. Hrushevsky's exhaustive study of the period marked a turning point in the historiography of Ukrainian Cossackdom. It largely ended the stage in which historians engaged mostly in the collection and publication of sources and the reconstruction of the sequence of events. Concurrently, it inaugurated the stage in which the analysis and interpretation of established facts became the primary goal of historical research.
