Ukrainian for Undergraduates is primarily intended as a textbook for students with some previous knowledge of Ukrainian, whether from the home, Saturday schools, high schools, or an elementary language course at the university level. Since the proficiency level of these students will necessarily be uneven, the textbook covers all the elements of basic morphology. The organization of the material proceeds from the easiest elements (e.g., the nominative case of nouns and the past tense of verbs) to the most complex (e.g., adjectival and adverbial participles). All of the material is presented from the point of view of an English speaker learning Ukrainian. 
Ukrainian for Undergraduates is divided into twenty-three chapters and an introduction to phonetics. This division readily corresponds to a lesson per week in a twenty-six-week academic year, with the first two weeks devoted to phonetics, and one week remaining for testing and review. Since the aim of the textbook is to instill rules of morphology, only a basic vocabulary of approximately 1300 words is provided, sufficient to allow for grammatical pattern drills and translations. Each chapter is preceded by a vocabulary list of words to be used in the drills and explanations. A short table of contents in each chapter provides a quick reference to the morphological items covered in the lesson as well as to the equivalent terminology in Ukrainian. This, it is hoped, will facilitate a transfer to a Ukrainian-language textbook in the next level of instruction. 
There are no dialogues or readings in Ukrainian for Undergraduates. This is a conscious omission. Although dialogues play an important part in any conversational approach, the aim of this book necessitates some limitations. The constraints imposed by a limited vocabulary and the relatively short time available for instruction would make dialogues both oversimplified in content and ineffective in reaching the desired goal. In place of dialogues this textbook envisions the use of language tapes to reinforce morphological forms, vocabulary, accentuation, and intonation through audio-oral drills. Suitable language tapes, together with a manual, are available. 
The accentuation and orthography, as well as the lexical fund are based on standard literary Ukrainian as presented in H. Holoskevych, Pravopysnyi slovnyk (New York, 1962) and Orfohrafichnyi slovnyk ukrains'koi movy (Kyiv, 1995). Where the two differ, preference was usually given to Holoskevych. Parallel accents, words, and forms, however, are provided where it was felt that, although one may be preferred, others are equally correct in standard literary usage.

Perhaps the most popular and successful English-Ukrainian language textbook in the world, Modern Ukrainian is a first-year Ukrainian grammar presents the fundamental morphology and vocabulary and includes notations on syntax and intonation. It consists of twenty lessons arranged in such a way that they can be covered within an academic year. The approximate time alloted per lesson is one week, although some lessons may take longer. Additional time is also necessary for review exercises, which appear at regular intervals.

Danylo Shumuk, a Ukrainian from the Volhynia region, was at one point Amnesty International's most "senior" prisoner of conscience, having been incarcerated in various prisons and labour camps for almost thirty-seven years. Life Sentence is his autobiography. It describes the author's early life and his involvement with the communist movement under Polish rule. After the Soviet invasion of Western Ukraine in the autumn of 1939, Shumuk became disillusioned with communism. During the war, he joined the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, which was engaged in a struggle to drive both German and Soviet occupants from Ukrainian soil. But in 1945, he was captured by Soviet troops and sentenced to death (later commuted to life imprisonment). Life Sentence gives a vivid portrayal of camp life: the factions, the intrigues and the unprecedented challenge to the Soviet authorities that was mounted by the strike in the Norilsk area in 1953. Throughout the book, the character of Shumuk shines through. He remains a symbol of defiant challenge to a totalitarian regime.

In 1923 the Soviet Ukrainian government proclaimed a policy of Ukrainization. In the years of relative autonomy that followed, a wide-ranging debate took place that raised issues of vital importance for Ukrainian culture. What was to be the character of Ukrainian literature? How would it be affected by the cultural values of the past? What would be its relations with Russian literature? How would the Revolution affect the production of new literary works? More than any other figure, Mykola Khvylovy, dominated this debate, which came to be known as the Literary Discussion. He argued in his pamphlets that Ukrainian literature should take an independent path, abandoning its former reliance on Russian models and seeking inspiration from European sources. His outspoken advocacy of this course soon brought him into conflict with Stalin's regime and drove him to suicide in 1933. After Khvylovy's death, his works were banned in the Soviet Union, and the name of this most prominent Ukrainian prose writer of the post-revolutionary years was systematically expunged from the record books. The issues that he raised have, however, survived both him and his antagonists. This volume represents the first English-language collection of his polemical writings.

The Soviet man-made famine of 1932–1933 in Ukraine claimed the lives of millions of people, yet until recently it has remained veiled in obscurity. This pioneering volume, which appeared before the publication of Robert Conquest's Harvest of Sorrow and the establishment of the US Congressional Committee on the Famine, was one of the first scholarly efforts to analyze the famine.   This collection of ten essays explores the causes of the famine, the scope of population loss, sources of information about the event, the impact of the famine on Ukrainian society, and the Western response. This first case study of how the East European peasantry was drawn into national politics focuses on the Ukrainians of Galicia (1772–1914). On the basis of first-hand testimony by peasants and rural notables, it demonstrates that the peasants' political consciousness was forged by serfdom, reforms initiated by the state, and the penetration of a money economy. This book breaks new ground on related issues, including the connection between class and national consciouness, the reasons for a sharp exacerbation of the peasantry's antagonism toward Jews, the new role of generational differences in the village, and the place of rural women in the national movement.
