The first issue to be published since 1960, here is Issue N° 1 from highly revered art publisher Cahiers d’Art“Cahiers d’Art” refers at once to a publishing house, a gallery, and to a revue founded in 1926 by Christian Zervos at 14 rue du Dragon in the heart of Saint-Germain des-Prés. Cahiers d’Art was entirely unique: a journal of contemporary art defined by its combination of striking typography and layout, abundant photography, and juxtaposition of ancient and modern art, including original works by Picasso, Miró, Giacometti, Duchamp, and Man Ray, where writers like Paul Éluard, Ernest Hemingway, and Samuel Beckett often replaced the usual art critics.This is the first issue of the Cahiers d’art revue to be published since 1960. Released in October 2012, the first new issue since the relaunch of Cahiers d'Art and published for the first time in French and English, is devoted to Ellsworth Kelly. The issue includes texts by Yve-Alain Bois, Ann Hindry, Richard F. Townsend, a homage to the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer by Japanese architect Tadao Ando and the republication of a conversation between Pablo Picasso and Christian Zervos originally published in issue No. 7-10, 1933.

Cahiers d'Art celebrates the 100th issue of the revue with Hiroshi Sugimoto. The issue, a true tribute to Sugimoto, is rooted in The World is Dead Today, a story written by Sugimoto for his exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo (2015), in which his photographic works are juxtaposed against his eclectic antiques collection recounting the end of modernity. Issue No.1 2014 is a rare opportunity to see unpublished works reproduced at the highest standard. Serpentine Gallery co-director Hans Ulrich Obrist interviewed Sugimoto for the issue and Akiko Miki, Chief Curator, Palais de Tokyo, has contributed an important text on the artist’s work. Hiroshi Sugimoto was born in Japan in 1948. A photographer since the 1970s, his work deals with history and temporal existence by investigating themes of time, empiricism, and metaphysics. His primary series include: Seascapes, Theaters, Dioramas, Portraits (of Madame Tussaud’s wax figures), Architecture, Colors of Shadow, Conceptual Forms and Lightning Fields. Sugimoto has received a number of grants and fellowships, and his work is held in the collections of the Tate Gallery, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and the Metropolitan Museum of New York, among many others.

Texts include a Hans Ulrich Obrist interview of the artist and contributions from renowned architect Jacques Herzog and Akiko Miki, Chief Curator, Palaid de Tokyo, in addition to an essay by Daniel Birnbaum, Director of the Moderna Museet, on the mathematical dimensions to Duchamps oeuvre, and areprint of an archival article from a 1929 Cahiers d'Art presentation on Brancusi's work with texts from surrealist playwright Roger Vitrac and Brancusi, himself.

“Calder reached his artistic maturity in 1920s Paris at a time when the city was very much the center of burgeoning avant-garde experimentation. His early years in Paris marked the beginning of a lasting love for France, where he met many of his lifelong artist friends,” explains Alexander S. C. Rower, grandson of the artist and president of the Calder Foundation. “Calder’s time in France, and his continued legacy there, constitutes a natural and rich subject for study.” The revue undertakes an in-depth exploration of the significant years Calder spent in France, beginning with his crucial years in Paris from 1926 to 1933, during which time the artist firmly established his imprint on the avant-garde scene. After the war, Calder spent significant periods of time in Paris in 1946, in Aix-en-Provence in 1953, and finally in Saché in the Loire Valley, where he would design his final monumental studio in 1963. The revue unveils the studios where Calder lived and worked through archival documentation, offering deeper insight into his work in each of these enigmatic places. Calder in France also celebrates the legacy of Calder’s Saché studio over the past 25 years as a residency program for contemporary artists. Over the past quarter century, fifty artists have worked in Calder’s studio, including Martin Puryear, Tara Donovan, Ernesto Neto and Sarah Sze. The revue contains interviews with Tadashi Kawamata, Abraham Cruzvillegas and Rachel Harrison, a selection of images of past residents’ work, and a special portfolio of models for new sculptures by 2014 resident Monika Sosnowska. The revue also highlights Calder’s relationship with former Cahiers d'Art publisher Christian Zervos through the reproduction of several pivotal essays on Calder published during the artist’s lifetime. Images of the artist’s work are published alongside seminal texts by Alexander S. C. Rower, and Susan Braeuer Dam, Director of Research and Publications at the Calder Foundation. The revue is also enriched with contributions by Alfred Pacquement, former Director of the Musée National d’Art moderne, Centre Pompidou and President of the Board of the Atelier Calder; Raphaël Bouvier, Curator at the Fondation Beyeler; Robert Rubin, architectural historian; and Hans-Ulrich Obrist, Co-Director of the Serpentine Gallery in London. Accompanying the texts are defining photographs of Calder and his work by Ugo Mulas and also Agnès Varda, with an interview by curator and art historian Joan Simon.

Cahiers d'Art is proud to present a special issue of the Cahiers d'Art revue entitled 'Picasso: In the Studio' giving a close look at Picasso in the studio as you have never seen him, featuring rare and previously unpublished photographs illustrating the artist in his studio and the work itself in progress. Through this rich and detailed exploration of the artists practice, the issue highlights both the creative process and artist’s gesture. Cécile Godefroy and Vérane Tasseau are guest editors for the issue. It is comprised of seven chapters, each devoted to a particular technique examined through rare photographs of the artist in his studios alongside texts by noted historians such as Elizabeth Cowling, Cécile Godefroy, Ann Hindry, Brigitte Leal, Marilyn McCully and Vérane Tasseau. Each chapter is followed by an interview with contemporary artists such as Miquel Barceló, George Condo, Sheila Hicks, William Kentridge, Jeff Koons, Robert Longo, and Tatiana Trouvé who have been invited to comment on the related technique in Picasso’s work, and in their own work as well as on their relationship to the artist.
