Artist Book. During 1978 and 1979 Melody Sumner Carnahan sent out over 100 copies of the blank form with a brief note to friends, family and artists she admired. Nearly everyone responded without knowing what, if anything, would be done with the completed forms. The result was this unique book containing 100 of the filled-out forms. Some of the better-known respondents included Dick Higgins, John Baldessari, John Cage, Ed Ruscha, Andy Warhol and James Dickey.

Fiction/Poetry/Music. Sumner Carnahan writes the most musical prose since Gertrude Stein--Village Voice. Melody Sumner Carnahan's cryptic, emigmatic fiction has found form for thirteen years in collaboration with composers and musicians. When THE TIME IS NOW was first published by Burning Books, Carnahan gave her book to friends asking them to put the works to music. The result is this 74-minute spoken word and music CD, which also contains an 80-page reprint of THE TIME IS NOW, first published in 1985. Sumner Carnahan is the author of 13 STORIES, also available from SPD.

The novel tracks consciousness and identity through the intermingling paths of its three protangonists: the historical person Helen Keller; the iconoclastic artist Arakawa; and the writer herself, Madeline Gins. At the same time, this innovative work advances and upsets key tenets of contemporary critcal theory. This is a beautifully published book whose author is a participant in the recent show POETRY PLASTIQUE at the Marianne Boesky Gallery in New York.
