The Atlas of the Vascular Plants of Texas is the first atlas of the Texas flora ever. The Atlas (volume 1: Dicots; volume 2: Ferns, Gymnosperms, Monocots) provides distributional information for about 6000 taxa of vascular plants native and naturalized in the state of Texas. This is the result of 52 years of herbarium and fieldwork, beginning in 1948 at Sul Ross State University, Alpine, Texas by the senior author. In short, Billie Turner has examined personally, touched, or pored over an estimated several hundred thousand sheets in the preparation of these Atlas volumes. Renewed floristic studies in Texas have experienced new growth during the last 20 years. Botanists throughout the state are collecting and documenting the flora with as many as 15,000 specimens a year. The Atlas is a prime-source document of biological data. While the purpose of this atlas is to document plant distributions, it is a de facto checklist for the vascular plants of the region. This work will be most welcomed by botanists, taxonomists, conservationists, environmental consultants, researchers, as well as teachers, students, wildflower enthusiasts, and naturalists.

Published with the support of the Tennessee Native Plant Society, this Fifth Checklist of Tennessee Vascular Plants draws upon previous works and adds the results of the authors' combined field experiences of more than a century. More than 170 state records have been reported since the last list in 1993, resulting in a known flora of 2439 native and 435 naturalized taxa. A watch list includes several hundred introduced taxa with the potential for naturalization. Family alignment, taxonomy, and nomenclature are up-dated and information on dozens of reported but unconfirmed taxa is appended. Other information includes common names, state and federal listings for taxa of conservation concern, the origin of non-native taxa, and synonymy. A brief history of the previous four checklists, dating from 1883, is included. All entries are alphabetical under major categories (pteridophytes, gymnosperms, angiosperms--monocots and dicots). Alternative family and genus names are given in the alphabetical listings, making the catalog user friendly. This catalog will be indispensable for professionals, students, and all others involved with or interested in the Tennessee vascular flora. In addition, the catalog provides the foundation for further work.

Have you ever wondered where a Puerto Rican plant grows, when it flowers, where it comes from? Well, here is an annotated checklist of the vascular plants presently found growing in the wild on the island of Puerto Rico that will be an invaluable aid to botanists, ecologists, foresters and any one else interested in the flora of Puerto Rico. Here you will find the distribution of vascular plants within the island provided according to a novel scheme that incorporates both broad physiographic areas and specific geographical sites. These are both described in the text and illustrated by three maps. You will also find useful information on the times of flowering, fruiting, and spore production for each plant and also references for each one to recent monographs on Puerto Rican plants where a fuller description of each can be found. In the past few years there have been many changes in the names of individual plant taxa (species, subspecies, and varieties) and in the alignment of plant families. These changes are recorded in this work in such a way that older scientific names as well as Spanish common names can be tracked to new accepted ones. Since there is much overlap of the Puerto Rican flora with that of other Caribbean islands and areas, these nomenclatural changes will also be of use to researchers working in those areas. This checklist covers 2909 taxa that are included in 1053 genera and 210 families. Of these taxa 2335 (80.2%) are native and 574 (19.7%) are exotic; of the native ones, 243 (10.4%) are endemic.

A Systematic Vademecum to the Vascular Plants of Puerto Rico

John Russell Bartlett found that it presented an agreeable landscape: irrigated fields, fine grass, and a winding line of tree canopies down the valley of the Santa Cruz River at Tucson, southern Arizona, in 1852. In 1913, John James Thornber collected aquatic plants from the sides of a cemented ditch at the foot of the very hill from which Bartlett had cast his gaze. By then, the free-flowing waters of the valley had all but disappeared. For now more than a century, scientists have measured, sampled, drilled, gauged, modeled, and photographed the watershed of the Santa Cruz River, aiming to reconstruct the process behind this pattern. Largely implicit in previous landscape histories treating changing geomorphology, hydrology, settlement, and socioeconomics have been those very things that made the landscape green and so memorable in the accounts of nineteenth century travelers. Spanning nearly seven decades from the earliest scientific surveys to cross the Sonoran Desert to the arrival of the Southern Pacific Rail Road, the organization of the University of Arizona to the founding of the Desert Botanical Laboratory An Agreeable Landscape: Historical Botany and Plant Biodiversity of a Sonoran Desert Bottomland, 1855 1920 is an accounting of plant life in the Santa Cruz and Rillito valleys of the Tucson Basin. Primary documents, historical narratives, and more than 1200 dried plant specimens are the foundation for this exploration of floristic richness, bottomland habitats, and ecological change. Over time, a convergence of cultural, political, and scientific currents at Tucson arguably the seat of the Santa Cruz watershed have made this the best-documented riparian ecosystem in the Sonoran Desert for this time period.
