Brice Marden, Michael Mazur, and Pat Steir have engaged in passionate relationships with various art forms from China and responded quite differently in their paintings. Pictorial photography in the United States has been revived as a serious area of inquiry in recent decades, surviving the mid-century denigration it received as the photography establishment embraced a more modernist, "straight" photography, yet it is still under-examined. "California Dreamin'" uncovers the very active, yet relatively overlooked tradition of pictorial photography practiced in the context of camera clubs in California during the first half of the twentieth century. It gives Pictorialism, and specifically the West Coast Pictorial tradition, thoughtful attention, bringing together the work of well-known photographers who have secured a place in the photography canon - including Ansel Adams, Anne Brigman, and Edward Weston - with the work of still lesser known photographers - such as William E. Dassonville, Will Connell, Arthur F. Kales, William Mortensen, and Karl Struss.This book also includes relatively unknown photographers such as Fred Archer, Louis Fleckenstein, Louis Goetz, and Kaye Shimojima, who were nevertheless quite active as Pictorial photographers on the West Coast in the early twentieth century. The broad selection of images discussed, many of which have never been reproduced before, showcases the work of over forty photographers and attests to the visual power, complexity, and breadth of photography created in the camera clubs.

"Celestial Images" celebrates the Golden Age of astronomical charts. Illustrations of cosmologies and heavenly phenomena entered an innovative phase at the time of the Renaissance, when the invention of printing improved the means of disseminating scientific knowledge and advances in astronomy revealed new information to be portrayed. This fortuitous conjunction engendered printed astronomical charts of surprising accuracy and delicate beauty. Assembled here from the Mendillo Collection of Antiquarian Astronomical Charts and Maps are over eighty examples of some of the finest celestial cartography created. There are star charts (maps of the constellations and the full celestial sphere), charts of planetary systems (cosmologies), and a smaller third category, charts of celestial phenomena (such as nebulae, comets, and eclipses). Together, they pay homage to the time when simple systems explained the universe and humankind held friendly commerce with the skies.

This volume records one of the first attempts to tackle the dual imperative of Gulag history and mythology, map and territory, through contemporary art. Seven internationally recognized contemporary artists--Vitaly Komar and Alexander Meiamid, Leonid Sokov, Grisha Bruskin, Eugene Yelchin, Irena Nakhova, and Vadim Zakharov--who grew up in the former Soviet Union have been given a "territory" in the Boston University Art Gallery in which to confront the haunted space of the "zone" in history and in the individual psyche. They represent two generations of ex-Soviet non-conformist art: Vitaly Komar and Alexander Melamind, Leonid Sokov, and Grisha Bruskin were born during Stalin's time and reflect with a mixture of nostalgia and irony on their totalitarian childhoods, while Irena Nakhova, Eugene Yelchin, and Vadim Zakharove, born during Khrushchev's thaw, have a more alienated attitude vis- -vis the totalitarian mythology. Their territories of terror are border zones that reflect their cross-cultural experience. What they capture in their installations is the legacy of terror that shaped structures of mentality, spatial imagination, utopian aspirations, and claustrophobic anxieties that mirror the tragic paradoxes of twentieth century history.

This book surveys the contemporary art photography movement of aerial photography, against the backdrop of the scientific and historical imagery that preceded it. This global project includes Italian photographer Olivo Barbieri, who surveys Rome, Shanghai, and Las Vegas from a helicopter. Esteban Pastorino Diaz photographs the landscapes of Greece and South America using a kite with a camera mounted beneath it. Terry Evans works with various conservancy groups around Chicago to document the flat views of the Midwestern landscapes. Frank Gohlke engages with the universal destruction of Mt St Helens' eruption and the re-growth of the following decade. Adriel Heisey builds his own planes, and hangs outside of them, to document Native American sites such as Chaco Canyon from a low altitude. Emmet Gowin travels all over the world to record from the air the marks of environmental destruction. David Maisel photographs the Great Salt Lake. Alex McLean flies his plane over a variety of places that are reduced to geometrical colored patterns. Additional artists include Barbara Bosworth, Marilyn Bridges, William Garnett, Mario Giacomelli, Emmet Gowin, and Bradford Washburn.
