The title of Zhang Huan’s latest monograph references the Buddhist concept of purgatory, in which the actions of the deceased are judged for seven weeks between death and rebirth. 49 Days utilizes 200 year-old reclaimed bricks, reworked by the artist into symbolic images such as skulls and pigs, which in turn form massive, disintegrating, mosaic-like sculptures.

Requiem for the Sun: The Art of Mono-ha is the most comprehensive study in English to date on the postwar Japanese movement Mono-ha (School of Things), and examines the group’s practice in Tokyo between 1968–1972 at the height of the nation’s political upheaval against the US–Japan Security Treaty, anti-Vietnam War protests and its oil crisis. The Mono-ha artists--who included Noburu Sekine, Lee Ufan, Kishio Suga and Koji Enokura--all distinguished themselves through an aesthetic detachment that, instead of “creating” things, strove instead to “rearrange” them into artworks that interacted with the spaces around them. While sharing certain traits with the Land Art and Minimalism movements that were taking place in the United States, and the Arte Povera movement in Italy, Mono-ha was ultimately a rejection of the Euro-American avant-garde and is now synonymous with the beginnings of contemporary art in Japan.

This volume constitutes a 30-year survey of works on paper by New York-based painter Carroll Dunham (born 1949). Dunham’s visual lexicon, drawing on such precursors as Arshile Gorky, André Masson and Philip Guston, and populated by biomorphic forms equipped with grinding teeth, phallic noses, top hats, daggers and guns, expresses an unbridled and polymorphous sexuality in which conflict is overtly celebrated. Dunham produces one or more drawings per day, for weeks at a time or longer, and has now amassed an astonishing breadth of material and content. Included here are some 366 drawings by Dunham, spanning his early career in the 1980s to the present, and covering all aspects of his drawing practice. Published for a 2012 exhibition at Blum & Poe, it offers one of the most comprehensive evaluations of Dunham’s drawing practice to date.

You Owe Me a Feeling is the first hardcover publication on Los Angeles-based artist Friedrich Kunath (born 1974), featuring the artist’s most recent playful, technicolor paintings, poetry by David Berman, as well as photographs of a middle-aged artist, slightly past his prime, in various scenarios in Los Angeles.

This catalogue is a 50-year survey of the work of Kishio Suga (born 1944), noted member of Mono-ha (School of Things), a group that radically redefined Japanese art during the 1960s and 1970s. It reproduces 70 artworks, some of which have not been displayed in more than 40 years.

Yoshitomo Nara: Drawings focuses on the internationally acclaimed Japanese artist's prolific drawing output of the past 30 years. Rendered in colored pencil and acrylic, Nara's drawings are executed on a variety of paper types, such as found envelopes, stationery and inexpensive lined sheets, and deftly fuse Japanese visual traditions such as manga and anime with Western modernism and elements of American pop culture. The artist's ever-increasing cast of childlike, vulnerable but sinister characters has won him a devoted following around the world. With an abundance of color plates, Yoshitomo Nara: Drawings includes reproductions of early works never publicly exhibited and omitted from the artist's catalogue raisonné, as well as an essay by Masue Kato. The volume is published in conjunction with a large-scale exhibition of Nara's paintings, drawings and sculptures at Blum &amp; Poe, Los Angeles, in Spring 2014. Yoshitomo Nara was born in 1959, in Aomori, Japan. He is one of the leading artists of Japan's Neo Pop movement. His drawings and paintings are informed by a range of influences, from manga and anime to punk rock. He has also worked in sculpture, ceramic and large-scale installation. In the fall of 2010, the Asia Society in New York presented the first major New York exhibition of his work.

Mark Grotjahn's (born 1968) ongoing Butterfly series--one of several investigations into the natural world in Grotjahn's oeuvre--focuses on perspectival techniques used since the Renaissance, such as dual and multiple vanishing points, to create the illusion of depth on a two-dimensional surface. Though at first the Butterfly paintings may appear entirely formal and graphic (alluding to modernist painting from Russian Constructivism to Op art), the raylike "butterfly wings" are often layered over under-paintings, giving them texture and tonal depth. This volume, published to accompany the first exhibition of Grotjahn's butterfly paintings at Blum & Poe in New York, not only collects these arresting compositions, but also delves into the artistic contexts involved, in an essay by Douglas Fogle that discusses the history of the Butterfly works since their conception in the early 2000s.
