The beginning of this book was conceived by Mackie McAlpin and Patsy Johnson while sitting in the Blackland Cemetery. We wanted the history of our communities to be passed on to the future generation. We have spent over ten years researching and talking with other citizens. This is the history of Blackland, Osborne and Oak Hill communities, Prentiss County, Mississippi. It tells the story of people, places and things in pictures and stories that bind these communities together. This book begins in pre-Civil War days to the present.

Hernando de Soto, rich from the 1536 Conquest of Peru, was the first to explore the interior of North America. He sought a northern passage to the finest market in the world. His people were the first Europeans to chronicle this “island of Florida.” They followed trails that became our highways, describing Native Americans along their way at places that are cities today. De Soto’s huge army landed in Florida in 1539. They circled through Georgia, South and North Carolina, Tennessee, North Georgia, and Alabama searching for gold along their way to supply ships at Mobile Bay or possibly Pensacola Bay. They lost their spoils in fires of battle perhaps just above Mobile. De Soto led his demoralized army due north, away from the ships, beyond the Tennessee River to prevent their escape back to Cuba or Mexico. In 1541 they trekked farther north, through Kentucky and Indiana, and the scouts as far as Chicago. Not finding an ocean and thereby a passage to China as he had anticipated, but Lake Michigan instead, he led his army southwest, through Southern Illinois, still searching for that elusive passage. De Soto discovered the Mississippi River, then he later sighted the Missouri River, which obviously drained a continent and NOT an island, (as he had surmised). In disgust he headed through the mountains of Missouri, searching for Vaca’s wealthy tribes. Finding no gold in or around those mountains, de Soto turned south. He died of anguish in Arkansas in 1542.

Though this is a true story of Revolutionary days, it has never before been published. It was told to me by Sally's great-granddaughter, who heard it when she was a little girl from the lips of Sally's own daughter, who got it from Sally herself. The silver that was carried away on that sad and dangerous journey was the only thing saved from the old home of General Priestly, and it is still a treasured heirloom in the family of his descendants. The money to pay the troops was received by Mrs. Priestly, and she did guard it and get it safely to General Washington. She did conceal it in her bed, and she did push over the ladder with the man on it when he tried to enter the house to steal it. She did go in her best gown to meet General Howe and General Knyphausen; she was offered the shameful bribe, and when she scorned to consider it, she was ordered to leave the house, "taking nothing with her," and her house was then burned to the ground, just as the story says. She did escape with her children and join her husband, and General Washington did give them a house of his own on the Rappahannock, where they lived until the war was over and General Priestly was at home again with his family. All these hardships, and many, many more, were endured by our brave forefathers to give us the privileges that we now enjoy. Shall we not remember and be grateful? Lucy Fitch Perkins
