India, over the decades, has experienced multiple changes, including population explosion, urbanisation, technological advancement, commercialisation of agriculture, change in land-use pattern, vast improvement of infrastructure facilities, etc., which have had an impact on the environment. Author Velayutham Saravanan attempts to understand the complexity of the environmental history of contemporary India from the early nineteenth to the early twenty-first centuries. Environmental History of Contemporary India begins with an analysis of land-use patterns and population and their impact on the environment. Further, it discusses the exploitation of natural resources for commercial motives by the colonial administration and argues that the colonial commercial policy of over one-and-a-half centuries had impacted the ecology and environment. The book also deliberates whether the postcolonial government policies have changed in favour of environmental protection or have continued with the colonial policy, and attempts to throw light on the issues of how the land for development policies have impacted the environment from the early nineteenth century until recent years. It then looks at the problem of electronic waste and its adverse impact on the environment, ecology and health in a historical manner while engaging with the complexity of the conflict between land and population in relation to the environment. The book is the most comprehensive presentation on land, population, technology and development that India has witnessed since the early nineteenth century.

Mired inside its rather archaic comprehension as a medical phenomenon, disability, for a long time now, has been ignored as a marker of identity. The world has only been busy in rectifying the absences that have, ostensibly "dis-abled", rather than accepting such impaired existences as human beings themselves. The volume intends to reclaim the representations of disability and present narratives that do not just use the figure of the disabled as a means to an end. It includes translation of 17 disability centric short stories from multiple Indian languages into English. Further it uses these stories as illustration to test and develop new theoretical formulations concerning disability and the disabled. What grants the proposed work its uniqueness is, in other words, not only the translations of the erstwhile lost stories of disability but also the use of these stories towards the formation of theoretical paradigms to move forward the project of Disability Studies. The volume shows, interrogates and problematizes the affect that impairment and disability has on those who are "abled". It presents how the "normal" human being approaches the disabled and interacts with them. All in all, owing to its academic engagement with disability as a phenomenon and within a narrative, this work intends to take the role of a resource book that will find ready use in the newly emergent multidisciplinary field of Disability Studies and will be of great significance to India and the world at large especially since Literature has a major role to play in this field. Not only, then, does it present different disability narratives to the world but, through their academic interrogation, also allows researchers and academics, especially in India, to form the theoretical enhancements in Disability Studies that both our country and the world desperately require.

Every narrative, however, carries the imprint of the times it was released in. Kannagi through the Ages: From the Epic to the Dravidian Movement aims to understand the ways in which representations of Kannagi in the epic Silappatikaram differ in every new narrative. Looking at the portrayals of Kannagi in plays, commentaries and folk narratives, the book examines how representations of gender and culture have evolved over time. Focusing on the interrelationships between a text and a society as well as between society and the way it moulds the category of 'woman' at different times through symbols and icon, the author analyses the social, cultural and political processes that contributed to the emergence of Kannagi as an icon of Tamil culture and epitome of Tamil womanhood.

This is a cultural history of the British Empire in India presented through ten key non-literary texts. Each of these texts embodies a particular attitude, ideology and/or development in imperial thinking, administrative process or cultural practices, and it is this attitude, ideology and development that the book unpacks through a reading of the texts, along with excerpts from the original documents. ­The aim is to flag and signpost momentous events and ideas through imperial texts such as J.Z. Holwell's 1756 account of the Black Hole of Calcutta, T.B. Macaulay's 1835 'Minute' on Indian education and Flora Annie Steel and Grace Gardiner's 1888 advice book on colonial domesticity, ­The Complete Indian Housekeeper and Cook. ­Through this book, it is hoped, the reader will get a flavour and glimpse of the complex and complicated structure that was the Raj. ­The book will appeal not only to the academic audience and literary scholars keen on the rhetoric of empire but also to the general, informed readers.

India and the subcontinent stimulated the curiosity of the British who came to India as traders. Each aspect of life in India - its people, customs, geography, climate, fauna and flora - was documented by British travelers, traders, administrators, soldiers to make sense to the European mind.
