The Birmingham Museum of Art is proud to display permanently the Dwight and Lucille Beeson Wedgwood Collection, the largest and most comprehensive collection of eighteenth-century Wedgwood outside England. The most important part of the collection falls within the Wedgwood factory's Wedgwood and Bentley period (1769-80) and includes examples of most extant forms. Delicate teaware, which is translucent when held to the light, and elaborately detailed vases, medallions, and other objects are but a few of the fascinating basalt and jasper forms from the late eighteenth century. Also represented are pre-Wedgwood pottery from Staffordshire, both transfer- and enamel-decorated cream ware, caneware, antico rosso, and pearl ware and white ware from the late-nineteenth century. This collection of approximately fourteen hundred objects is a comprehensive compilation of most forms of Wedgwood's ware from the eighteenth century, and such rare pieces as the figure of Britannia, a medallion bearing the portrait of Sir William Hamilton and inscribed by Thomas Bentley, and a cream-ware cream cullier can be found in no other museum.Unlike the history of most ceramics, the history of Wedgwood is directly tied to the life of Josiah Wedgwood, a true Renaissance man, and the events of the eighteenth century. In this volume, the author traces Wedgwood's life and briefly discusses changes in the pottery industry which supported Wedgwood's sustained success. Sources of design and decoration are listed for many objects, and methods of production in relationship to distinctive characteristics of eighteenth-century ware are also delineated.Each entry in the catalog section gives complete information about the item: its date, dimensions, marks, provenance, and design source, if known. The black-and-white photographs of the items are supplemented by numerous color plates. Many design sources are illustrated.

These paintings, acquired over two decades of study &amp; dedication, represent a very personal statement of the collecting philosophy of two astute connoisseurs. Over a 21-year period the Baekelands have traveled throughout the country tirelessly seeking examples of fine American art from a wide variety of sources. These paintings not only possess great aesthetic interest, but together illustrate the most important intellectual developments in the history of American art from 1833 to 1925.</p>

<p>The Beeson Collection was begun in 1946 and consists of roughly 1400 pieces, assembled through purchases at auction, from dealers and other collectors, in addition to two major collections. In 1975 the entire collection was donated to the Birmingham Museum of Art (Alabama), where it is exhibited in a special gallery. This collection concentrates mainly on the huge range of wares from the Josiah Wedgwood and Thomas Bentley partnership period (1769-80) and reveals the development of Wedgwood pottery from the red stoneware produced in the 1760s to the work of Emile-Aubert Lessore produced in the 1870s. The book itself is an exposition of the social history of the 18th century and contains detailed descriptions of the wares and manufacturing techniques at the Wedgwood works. Josiah Wedgwood is portrayed as an energetic Renaissance man who made many different types of pottery as well as many technical contributions to the pottery industry and to English society. In his numerous letters to his partner Thomas Bentley, who controlled the London end of the trade, all manner of life is revealed. Rising from modest beginnings Josiah became one of the wealthiest men in England, acquiring en route a wide knowledge of the arts, science, chemistry and physics. Always interested in new inventions, he was one of the many English artists who ushered in neoclassicism; he created Jasper ware to capture the pastel colours used by the architects Adam and James Wyatt, and instituted many innovations in the manufacture of both pottery and porcelain throughout his notable career. This volume contains virtually everything the aspiring collector needs to know about the vast range of wares and designs produced by Wedgwood.</p>
