This book records Sam Falls’ (born 1984) new body of work―sound, video, sculptural and wall pieces―produced for his 2015 show at Ballroom Marfa in Texas. The catalogue mixes documentation of Falls’ exhibition with original verse and photos of the works in progress by the artist himself.

Ballroom Marfa

Featuring a collaborative installation by Jonah Freeman, Justin Lowe and Alexandre Singh, the acclaimed 2008 Ballroom Marfa exhibition Hello Meth Lab in the Sun was comprised of diorama-like depictions of a hippie commune, a meth lab and other sites of modern industrial production. It was also shown in part at The Station during Art Basel Miami 2008.

Two Face is an exhibition by Ballroom Marfa artists-in-residence Aaron Curry (born 1972) and Thomas Houseago (born 1972). Based in Los Angeles, Curry and Houseago are sculptors who adopt a Janus-faced approach to form and process, simultaneously looking to the past and the future. Their Marfa exhibition is the culmination of a joint residency that nurtured the intense dialogue the artists have established.

Sound Speed Marker focuses on Hubbard / Birchler's recent trilogy of video installations--Grand Paris Texas (2009), Movie Mountain (Méliès) (2011) and Giant (2014)--which explore the physical conditions and social character of the cinematic experience, with particular respect to film's relationship to place and the kinds of traces movies leave behind. Published on the occasion of the touring exhibition Sound Speed Marker presented at Ballroom Marfa, the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, and the Blaffer Museum of Art at the University of Houston, this richly illustrated volume includes all three components of Hubbard / Birchler's newest trilogy, as well as related photography and sculpture. Four essays and an interview with the artists contribute new scholarship in examining the genesis of the works.
