Bartnikowski’s stories are one of the most moving evidence of tragic fate of children in Auschwitz. In the book, the camp is shown from their perspective. The author describes hunger, fear, loneliness and despair of children who were uprooted from the safe world of their childhood and left at the mercy of violence and death. Dry narration intensifies dramatic nature of depicted scenes. The camp experience is deeply engraved in Bartnikowski’s memory. He said in one of his interviews: “I wanted to throw it away, get rid of it. Forever! I started to write down my memories and memories of my friends. I hoped that once they had been written they would be gone. Unfortunately, it did not happen so…”. The Polish version of 'Childhood Behind Barbed Wire' was first published in 1969.

'The SS physicians serving in the concentration camps, among them Auschwitz, played a special role. Violating the Hippocratic Oath, they participated in the mass extermination of the Jews, carried out the selections of newly arrived Jewish transports, and oversaw the killing process. They sentenced the most seriously ill and overworked prisoners in the camp hospitals to death in the gas chambers or killed them with lethal phenol injections to the heart, and then deliberately falsified their death certificates. They carried out medical experiments on prisoners and made a mockery of the mediacal profession in a variety of other ways. By supporting the extermination programm in the camp, they earned themselves a place in history as medical criminals'. The volume includes 13 biographical notes of SS physicians who took part in the killing process in the concentration camps (Clauberg, Schumann, Mengele, Wirths, Kremer, etc.). There are also biographical sketches of the authors of memoirs, accounts and testimonies, and timeline of important events in the Auschwitz Concentration Camp.

Values and Violence in Auschwitz: A Sociological Analysis Anna Pawelczyńska (b. 1922) - Polish university professor and sociologist of culture. Imprisoned in Auschwitz and Flossenbürg concentration camps during the World War II. Author and co-author of over 25 books and major studies as well as over a hundred peer-reviewed articles. In 1972, she published "Wartości a przemoc", an attempt at a sociological approach to issues connected with the concentration camps on the basis of "participatory observation". The book appeared in an American version as "Values and Violence in Auschwitz" in 1979 and a German version ("Werte gegen Gewalt") in 2001. Since its initial publication, this unique study has become one of the most respected considerations of the sociological realm of Nazi concentration camps during the World War II. Using the Auschwitz camp as the center for this investigation, Anna Pawelczyńska incorporates academic examination with personal evaluation to provide a sensitive yet comprehensive sociological analysis of human behavior in concentration camps.

Forbidden Art: Illegal Works by Concentration Camp Prisoners

Helena Dunicz Niwińska was born in Vienna in 1915. She lived with her parents and brothers in her hometown of Lwów until 1943. At the age of 10, she began learning to play the violin at the conservatory of the Polish Musical Society. She studied pedagogy from 1934 to 1939, continuing her musical education the whole time. After their arrest in January 1943 and incarceration in Łącki Prison, she and her mother were deported to Auschwitz in October 1943. In Birkenau, she was a member of the women's orchestra-as a violinist-until January 1945. After being evacuated to the Ravensbrück and Neustadt-Glewe camps, she was liberated in May 1945. She and her fellow prisoner Jadwiga Zatorska returned at the end of May to a postwar Poland that no longer included her beloved hometown of Lwów. She moved in with Jadwiga's family in Cracow, and soon after began a career at the Polish Musical Publishers, where she worked until she retired in 1975 as deputy director of publications for musical education. Her book 'One of the Girls in the Band: The Memoirs of a Violinist from Birkenau' is the story of her family's tragic fate and more particularly of the time when, as prisoner number 64118, she played in the women's camp orchestra. She survived Auschwitz-Birkenau by playing the violin.
