Virginia Woolf in Richmond

Although more commonly associated with Bloomsbury, Virginia and her husband Leonard Woolf lived in Richmond-upon-Thames for ten years from the time of the First World War (1914-1924). Refuting the common misconception that she disliked the town, this book explores her daily habits as well as her intimate thoughts while living at the pretty house she came to love – Hogarth House. Drawing on information from her many letters and diaries, the editor reveals how Richmond’s relaxed way of life came to influence the writer, from her experimentation as a novelist to her work with her husband and the Hogarth Press, from her relationships with her servants to her many famous visitors.

The Portuguese visual artist Paula Rego has inspired this new trilogy of plays. Her paintingsCrivelli's Garden, The Prey, andBreaking China became the catalyst for writing by theatre maker Fiona Graham. Commissioned by Theatre Centre and Komedia, these three new plays were developed for specific audiences through a series of artist/audience residencies and collaborations. These works have toured Britain and been re-staged in Portugal and Singapore.Specifically commissioned for children and young people. This anthology also contains useful teacher's notes and colour images of the artworks mentioned. Crivelli's Garden was created for a 16+ audience and explores rites of passage as two young women decide whether they should stay or leave their fishing village to go to university in Portugal. Between Friends is for 7-11 year olds and examines the politics of friendship between three young people when they are shipwrecked and abandoned in a lighthouse. Breaking China is for 4-8 year olds and shows the importance of creative play and storytelling when making sense of change and adversity.

The unveiling of the statue caused considerable public controversy with some viewers attempting to cover it up. The naked statue designed by artist Maggi Hambling upset many feminists who claimed that it undermined the works of Wollstonecraft and her belief in the equality of women while others praised the concept for honouring the spirit of womanhood rather than putting a representational artwork of Wollstonecraft on a plinth.Kaethe Fine's play 'Wollstonecraft Live!' was performed on Newington Green in aid of the fundraising campaign for the statue. The playtext depicts a staged film shoot which centers on a love story between the 18th century radical, Mary Wollstonecraft, and a 21st century actor cast as William Godwin who was Mary's lover for the last 5 years of her life. It includes eight characters: three Mary Wollstonecrafts, (the actor Cast as) Godwin, a Boom Operator, the Sound Mixer, the assistant Director, and the Casting Director interact with each other as they attempt to represent the story of Mary's life in a bio-pic. As they all rehearse a critical tracking shot for the film, power shifts from the absent Director, to the three Marys who have primarily functioned as production assistants. On set, the actor Cast as Godwin rehearses his lines, comprised of fragments from 'Memoirs of the author of a Vindication of the Rights of Woman', William Godwin's real biography of Mary written after she died giving birth to their daughter, Mary Shelley. The relationships in Mary's life, all tragically cut short by circumstance are exposed through real letters and contemporary dialogue, creating a fragmented narration of the time in which she lived, loved and died. About the Author Kaethe Fine began performing at the age of 8, on the streets of New York, in her Gircus (girl-circus). She attended NYC’s High School for Performing Arts, and at 15 appeared in The Chosen, a feature film with Rod Steiger and Maximillian Schell. She holds a BFA in Filmmaking from Purchase College where she made award winning, super-8 short, Clearing which was shown on PBS. She has created videos for her own and others' installations, including NY artist/performer Claude Wampler, and Niels Radtke-Klein. Her first play, 'Motivation for the Meat of Life' was produced in New York at the William Redfield Theater. Other plays ('A Factor of 2', 'Zero Point Field' and 'Vows') have been developed in association with The Labyrinth Theater Company, Ridge Theater and RADA. Kaethe has worked as a videographer, researcher, script-supervisor and editor for independent producers, including James Schamus and Christine Vaschon and has a Masters in Writing for Performance from the University of London’s Goldsmiths College. In 2005 she wrote and associate produced 'Wollstonecraft Live!' which was produced in Stoke Newington, London by Fragments & Monuments. Kaethe has performed her poetry at Battersea Art Centre’s App
