BLOX opened its doors on the Copenhagen waterfront in 2018. Funded and built by the philanthropic association Realdania and designed by Dutch architects OMA, the building is a programmatic mix of functions that creates a new destination in this very central and challenging location. BLOX hosts the Danish Architecture Centre and also BLOXHUB, an interdisciplinary environment promoting innovation and sustainable urban development. This monograph offers an in-depth look at the project and its context, and includes essays by Aaron Betsky and Carsten Thau, plus conversations with representatives of OMA, Realdania, and the Danish Architecture Centre.

Danish-Norwegian artist Karen Bit Vejle uses scissors as her brush to create intricate and awe-inspiring works of art with cut paper. The art of psaligraphy hit Europe with the wave of Eastern influence in the 17th century, and famed Danish author Hans Christian Anderson was among its practitioners. The tradition of paper-cutting is particularly strong in Scandinavia, where gaekkebrev, cards with cut-paper snowflakes, are still exchanged by sweethearts each spring, and Bit Vejle has worked to master the medium since she was a young girl. The past couple of years have seen her work grow in scale and sophistication, creating both abstracted floral patterns and enormous narrative tableaux as delicate as lace. Extensive illustrations along with actual inset papercuts creates a stunning document of this unique artist s work. Superkilen, a kilometer-long band wedging through one of the most ethnically diverse and socially challenged neighborhoods in Denmark, celebrates the dawn of a new type of public space. This large-scale public project recipient of a 2013 AIA Award for Regional and Urban Design is the result of an invitational competition led by the city of Copenhagen and the Realdania Foundation. Bjarke Ingels award-winning architecture firm BIG, landscape architecture studio Topotek 1, and high-profile artist collective Superflex were chosen to create an urban space with a strong local identity. The project was conceived as a giant exhibition space of urban best practices for public art and design. The Superkilen (literally, super wedge ) is defined on the ground by three color-coded areas, each offering distinctive public programs and a strong aesthetic identity in shades of hot pink, neon orange and red. In order to celebrate the neighborhood s rich multicultural heritage, the park s design scheme integrates in true postmodern fashion a collection of globally found objects from the 60 home countries of the surrounding inhabitants. The grounds of the Superkilen are peppered with exercise gear from Muscle Beach, Los Angeles; sewage drains from Israel; palm trees from China; and flashing neon signs from Qatar and Russia, just for a start. Superkilen is a conceptual vehicle for integration, enforcing local sentiments of ownership while turning public participation into the driving force behind its design process. Norwegian artist Odd Nerdrum (born 1944) was a student at the Academy of Art in Oslo when modernism made its delayed entry into Norway. Nerdrum broke away from his peers who rallied around the likes of Warhol and Lichtenstein, instead becoming a follower of Rembrandt and a painter in the classical tradition. Art students from all over the world have since sought out his teachings, and many have become internationally known in their own right.
