One of the most influential artists of our time, Mike Kelley (1954--2012) produced a body of innovative work mining American popular culture as well as modernist and postmodernist art -- relentless examinations of subjectivity and of society that are both sinister and ecstatic. With a wide range of media, Kelley's work explores themes as varied as post-punk politics, religious systems, social class, and repressed memory. Using architectural models to represent schools he attended, his 1995 work, Educational Complex, presents forgotten spaces as frames for private trauma, real or imagined. The work's implications are at once miniature and massive. In this book, John Miller offers an illustrated examination of this milestone work that marked a significant change in Kelley's practice. A "complex" can mean an architectural configuration, a psychological syndrome, or a political apparatus, and Miller approaches Educational Complex through corresponding lines of inquiry, considering the making of the work, examining it in terms of education and trauma (sexual or otherwise), and investigating how it tests the ideological horizon of art as an institution. Miller shows that in Educational Complex, Kelley expands his political and aesthetic focus, including not only such artifacts as generic forms of architecture but (inspired by the infamous McMartin Preschool case) popular fantasies associated with ritual sex abuse and false memory syndrome. Through this archaeology of the contemporary, Miller argues, Kelley examines the mandate for education and the liberal democratic premises underpinning it.

A collection of the artist's work; bilingual descriptions in English and French. Mr. Jacquet, associated with Pop Art and the minimovement known as Mec Art (for mechanical art), made use of mechanical processes and advertising clichés in photoscreened works like his "Déjeuner sur l'herbe" series. In it, he posed three friends, including the French critic Pierre Restany and his wife, in modern dress and slipped in a commercially packaged loaf of bread with the label "Jacquet." He later used photoscreen processes to superimpose textures like burlap, wood or steel on cotton fabric, Plexiglas or plastic.

<p>Catherine Millet est née en 1948, à Bois-Colombes, dans la région parisienne. Elle est écrivain et critique d’art, directrice de la rédaction d’artpress, revue à la fondation de laquelle elle a participé en 1972. Elle est l’auteur d’ouvrages sur l’art contemporain, parmi lesquels Yves Klein (éd. art press/Flammarion, 1982), L’Art contemporain en France (éd. Flammarion, 1987, nouvelle édition mise à jour, 1994 puis 2005, 2015), L’art contemporain, histoire et géographie (éd. Flammarion 1997, nouvelle édition augmentée, « Champs Flammarion », 2006), Dalí et moi (Gallimard, 2005), Le Corps exposé (Cécile Defaut, 2011). En tant que commissaire d’expositions, elle a entre autres réalisé : Baroque 81 (Musée d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, 1981), Douze artistes français dans l'espace (Tokyo, Séoul, 1985). Elle a également été commissaire de la section française de la Biennale de São Paulo en 1989, qui a reçu le Grand Prix du meilleur pavillon, et commissaire du Pavillon français pour la Biennale de Venise 1995. En 2001, elle a publié aux éditions du Seuil : La vie sexuelle de Catherine M., ouvrage qui a fait l’objet de plus de quarante traductions, puis en 2003, aux éditions Stock, Riquet à la houppe, Millet à la loupe, et en 2008, Jour de Souffrance, aux éditions Flammarion. Catherine Millet a publié son troisième ouvrage autobiographique, Une enfance de rêve, en avril 2014.D’art press à Catherine M., livre d’entretiens avec Richard Leydier paraît en 2011 aux éditions Gallimard. En 2012 et 2013 plusieurs événements et publications ont marqué l’anniversaire des 40 ans d’artpress, en particulier un album rétrospectif aux éditions de La Martinière et trois journées de rencontres, conférences et concerts à la Bibliothèque Nationale de France. En 2017, Catherine Millet publie Aimer Lawrence aux éditions Flammarion.</p>
