A colorful children¿s book about the great desert national park written and illustrated by the three time Death Valley artist-in-residence Janet Morgan. Mention Death Valley and most people imagine a desolate lifeless place. But the real Death Valley is full of life - it hums and rattles and caws. Its dynamic landscape has been shaped by volcanoes, earthquakes, floods, wind, and heat. Starting early in the morning the big black ravens Ravenna and Ramone are eager to take us on a tour of their home. From sunrise at Zabriskie Point we fly over evidence of the flash floods that have carved the land, down to the lowest, hottest and driest place in North America. We join the ravens on their quest to find life in the desert, i.e. lunch. Death Valley has it all. Standing on the salt flats at Badwater Basin, 282 feet below sea level, you can look up to the snowy top of Telescope Peak 11,000 feet above you. There are craters, canyons, geologic mysteries, green oasis, and a great variety of birds, snakes, reptiles, and mammals. Few people get far from the paved roads and know little of the vast and varied beauty of the park, which is 3 million acres¿the size of the state of Connecticut. Getting a child fascinated by Death Valley will get them excited about geology, biology, ecology, and our amazing National Parks, opening them to the joys of learning.

In March of 2020 the Covid 19 quarantine in Brooklyn was extreme. For people without cars and wary of public transportation life was very limited. In August we finally started riding the subway again and going down to a quiet Coney Island was a real treat. All the rides sat silent for a whole year. The collection of fisherman, homeless people and locals felt like an odd post-apocalyptic community. Everyone was very chatty when we were drawing and I heard a lot of stories.
