<p>This letterpress limited edition revives a notable collection of 16th century fables. Through an enduring interest in the works of Arthur Golding, Arion Press director Andrew Hoyem learned of an unpublished manuscript of 125 Aesopic fables by the English Renaissance writer in the collection of Columbia University. A photocopy of the holograph was obtained, and the help of Professor Richard G. Barnes of Pomona College was enlisted. Dr. Barnes' original scholarship provided the necessary basis for this first edition of a work by a master of the English language 400 years after it was written. Balancing the five traditional textual elements against the images of an emblem book was an exciting typographic challenge for the Press. The very early (and rare) etchings of Gheeraerts appeared in French and Latin editions of the book in the sixteenth century and now join the English in the twentieth. </p>
<p> This book is published by Arion Press, which "produces some of the most beautiful limited-edition books in the world," according to the New York Times. Format: 8 by 6 inches, 356 pages. The type, Monotype Garamont, with photo-engraved plates, was printed on Ingres d'Arches mouldmade paper. Bound in tan goatskin spine and corners, cloth sides. Edition of 400 copies. 356 pages.</p>

This collection of artwork by Rudolf Koch and Fritz Kredel consists of 158 emblems from the history of Christianity, reissuing in book form a rare portfolio (1932-35) as a resource for designers, scholars, and churches. An English translation of the German text is provided. Rudolf Koch (1878-1934) was an artist of broad and profound accomplishment, best-known for his type design and calligraphy. He was prolific in the ecclesiastical arts, producing, with his arts-and-crafts group, many beautiful objects that incorporated these symbols. Koch's intention was that Christian Symbols be used freely, as a source-book for artists, designers, scholars, and churches. Readers are free to copy and reuse artwork from this edition.  This edition is produced by Arion Press, renowned for its beautifully designed and printed books. Format: 11 by 7-3/4 inches, 176 pages. The original texts and images are printed by letterpress from photopolymer plates. The type for the foreword and appendix was set by photocomposition in Kabel, a typeface designed by Rudolf Koch. The paper is acid-free Mohawk Vellum. The binding is deep blue-green cloth over boards, enclosed in a slipcase with blue and magenta wrap-around label.
