The anthology Politics of Memory investigates the changing relationship between artistic practices and the documentary. The document - offered as an objective trace left by events, as material proof or as the creation of reality - can transform a state of memory into 'state memory' through historical removal which, ultimately challenges permanent or temporary forgetting, casting memory into the future. Bringing together the work of international artists and filmmakers including Hito Steyerl, Eric Baudelaire and Clemens von Wedemeyer and others who attended the cycle of conferences held between 2009 and 2013 at Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti Milano, this illustrated softcover publication is the result of a multi-year research project promoted by NABA's Visual Arts and Curatorial Studies program. Berlin-based feminist artist Alex Martinis Roe (b. 1982) researched the genealogy of political practice among different feminist movements from the 1970s to the present in Europe and Australia to create To Become Two, a six-element film installation and accompanying exhibition catalog/reader. Using participant observation, oral history interviewing and archival research, Martinis Roe aims to engender new and contemporary ways to practice feminist politics and theory. Twenty women artists, writers, curators and feminist activists also collaborated with Martinis Roe to produce the research creating this in-depth project. Although the Brazilian cultural movement Tropiclia is most commonly associated with music and the visual arts, its sense of playfulness and strategies of appropriation have stimulated many of the countrys filmmakers since the 1960s. The term was first given to a pair of installations by Hlio Oiticica, a song by Caetano veloso, and an album released in 1968 by artists that included Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, and Os Mutantes. According to veloso, the catalyst for the flurry of creative activity was Glauber Rochas landmark film Terra em Transe (Land in Anguish, 1967). Although Tropiclia was silenced by Brazils military dictatorship, its revolutionary gestures continued to influence Brazilian cinema. fifty years later, what is the legacy and its effect on filmmaking in Brazil today? Author and film historian Stefan Solomon brings together numerous historical and contemporary voices to consider these questions, while offering multiple perspectives on this vibrant time in Brazilian art and culture. Tropiclia and Beyond accompanied a film series at the Tate Modern in 2017.
