From the bell tower of the Cranston Print Works in Spragueville, which called hundreds to work in its time, to the quiet ripples of the Pawtuxet River, where the first settlers of Cranston built their homes in the 17th century, and from the family homesteads of Western Cranston to the elegant houses of Edgewood, Cranston is a unique place that is more than just a city―it is a neighborhood of people who take pride in their individuality and their hometown roots. During the Civil War, when people talked about Cranston, they were talking about Spragueville and the A.&W. Sprague Mills, then the largest calico manufacturing company in the world. The murder of Amasa Sprague in 1843 changed the face of capital punishment in Rhode Island.

Since its founding in 1891, Delaware State University has proven to be an influential leader in the campaign for equal and quality higher education for students coming from disadvantaged backgrounds in the state of Delaware. Originally the State College for Colored Students, the school was established in response to the Second Morrill Land Grant Act, which required states to allow African Americans entrance into state colleges or to create separate schools for such students. Born in the age of segregation, this proud institution has weathered the storms of over a century and, with vision and persistence, transformed itself into a highly regarded, four-year university. Containing over two hundred black-and-white photographs, Delaware State University tells the remarkable story of a beloved college. The faces and deeds of faculty and students--from professional athlete John Taylor to Ambassador Jerome Holland, from Civil Rights activist Ethel Belton to jazz great Clifford Brown--are depicted in this volume, as well as historical events that came to bear on university life, such as the training of pilots through the Civilian Pilot Training Program and the desegregation that stemmed from the Civil Rights Movement. In North Carolina’s Down East region, beautiful scenery and landscapes are an everyday occurrence, whether it be a peaceful day full of clear, azure skies or a tempestuous climate marked by dramatic clouds of black and gray illuminated by streaks of brilliant lightning. Born in 1911 in Morehead City, Reginald Worth Lewis, a gifted painter and photographer, found inspiration in this environment for his art and documented the area’s natural beauty through his attentive brushstrokes and his camera’s ever-vigilant lens. Possessing an eye for the area’s natural artistry, Reginald Lewis was able to photograph and capture truly the Down East experience. This volume, with over 200 black-and-white photographs, celebrates his vision and showcases some of his best work over his award-winning career. Mr. Lewis recorded the area’s charm by finding symmetry and compelling subject matter in the everyday and mundane, such as scenes along the waterfront, from shrimpers returning after a long day’s trip, to dilapidated boats lining the shoreline, to fishermen hard at work retrieving full nets, to cats finding leisure and sport along the docks. Throughout the book, these images provide readers an opportunity to experience the Down East of yesteryear, a time when Morehead City was still a small fishing and shrimping village and the pace of life was measured by the changing tides.

By the 1870s, the word was out about Colorado. East coast and Midwest prospectors, European immigrants, and African Americans newly freed from slavery, rushed to Denver to find work and their fortune in silver and gold. Captured here in almost 200 vintage images is the story of the African Americans who escaped the oppression and racism of the post Civil War South, and created a city within a city: the Five Points neighborhood of Denver. Named in 1881 for a bustling five-way intersection, the Five Points area became the commercial and social sector for African American churches, businesses, clubs, and homes, and the heart of Denver's black community. Showcased here are the photographs of once thriving Five Points businesses in the Welton Street business district, such as Otha Rice's Tap Room and Oven and the Rossonian Hotel, as well as the familiar faces of the Cosmopolitan Club, Madame CJ Walker, and Dr. Justina Ford, Denver's first African-American female doctor.

The first civil government in Florissant was established in 1786, three years before the United States adopted its constitution and George Washington was elected the country's first president. French farmers and fur trappers looked upon the land and called it the "Valle Fleurissant"-which is to say, "the flowering or fertile valley." The community remained small until after World War II. Between 1950 and 1980, the population grew from 3,737 to 76,754. Today the community strives to preserve its proud heritage and build on the strength of its diverse population. The historic images in this book illustrate the city's founding and development, from the first French settlers to the post World War II building boom to the exciting new city of today.

Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, originally platted as the village of "Rochester," took shape in the late 1830s and 1840s. Settled by Yankee businessmen from the East, "Sheboygan at the Falls" was strong from the beginning, surviving even the national financial panic of 1837. As the village grew up along the Sheboygan River, this reliable source of water ensured rapid growth of industry and population and the accompanying prosperity. A city of Greek Revival and Cream City brick architecture, Sheboygan Falls boasts two districts listed on the National Historic Register. The Cole Historic District is the largest Greek Revival District west of the East Coast. Its five buildings were built between 1837 and 1846. The largely original downtown business district of the city includes buildings that once housed a tannery, a cheese bandage factory, a rake factory, a woolen mill, a Temperance Hall for teetotalers, and a Free Hall for women.
