Burlington began as a railroad town, but it became known across the world as a textile center. In the 1850s, the newly formed North Carolina Railroad Company needed a maintenance facility halfway between Goldsboro and Charlotte. The location was given a generic name, Company Shops, which was simply an expression of the railroad’s operation. In 1886, the shops were moved to a new location, so in 1887, people here chose a new name―Burlington―and the little town moved on. Burlington became known as the “Hosiery Center of the South,” and in 1923, Burlington Mills was formed. It became the largest maker of textile products in the world and carried the name of this community around the globe. In addition to textiles, industries over the years have included aircraft, telephone components, and military radar equipment, and by the beginning of the 21st century, Burlington was home to Labcorp, the nation’s second largest medical testing laboratory.

The county seat of Monmouth County, Freehold began as an agricultural community and later developed into a center of commerce and industry. The rural characters of both Freehold Township and Freehold Borough are revealed in this marvelous new photographic history, which contains many photographs taken around the turn of the century. T his fantastic collection of about two hundred historic images includes views of early hotels and merchants along an unpaved Main Street, and glimpses of the workrooms and looms inside the Karaghusian Rug Mill. Well-known Freehold residents such aschampion bicyclist Arthur Zimmerman are featured, as well as many popular historic and recreational sites including the Freehold Raceway, and, of course, Molly Pitcher’s Well. All of the photographs are accompanied by concise, engaging commentary.

Skiing in New England has not always been such a breathtaking sport connected with winter vacations at distant and local resorts. From the early 1870s, Norwegian, Swedish, and Finnish immigrants utilized skis to carry the mail and to travel through the woods to school and work. Later, a group of college men at Dartmouth founded the Outing Club, which transformed skiing from everyday practicality into swift-moving recreation. Since that time, the excitement and exhilaration of skiing has spread nationwide.
