The book is illustrated and explores various themes and ideas taught at the CXC level throughout the region. It is intended as a supplement for students reading Caribbean History, and should serve as a handbook of basic data. There are brief biographical sketches of Caribbean leaders, descriptions of the sugar industrial complex in the Caribbean, descriptions of articles of diet, aspects of Caribbean expressive culture,colonial architecture, piracy, free villages, natural resources, nationalism and so on. In this way, it seeks to correct the imbalance found in several traditional texts aimed at similar audiences but which have a distinctly European perspective.The text seeks to take the reader into the living experience that is Caribbean history. The author tries to encourage our students to see Caribbean history as their history, one which they can be justifiably proud of and one which they will eventually come to see as more than just "another subject to pass". For general audiences the text is an easy read, a source to consult for quick facts about the Caribbean. There are no other books covering Caribbean History in this way, and as such there is no competition. It has application to the CXC and CAPE History syllabuses and will serve as a ready reference through to 1985. The book can most definitely be of use to high school students and to undergraduates who read the survey course in Caribbean History during their second year.

The main thesis advanced is quite damning, and many will question its fairness: it is that the almost complete failure of all Jamaican institutions in the 1990s has created a state of social and economic chaos. This institutional failure is traceable to a single source: the political culture and value systems which have evolved over the past sixty years, in particular, the contribution of this political culture to the subverting of democracy, whereby the democratic power of the people is replaced by the oligarchic power of the party. The issues: Why is our country not developing? Why are our children not learning in schools? Why is there so little accountability in the Government? Why does Parliament not seem to represent the people? Why does the Auditor General s report highlight the same issues every year? Why is it that elections do not seem to change anything? Why does the Ministry of Security call for a new war on crime every July? The major theme of the work is the failure and collapse of Jamaican organizations and institutions since the 1960s, which has led to a state of social and economic chaos. The author discusses the inability of many of Jamaica's institutions to function. These include the system of justice and law, the Constitution, and public and private sector organisations. The author traces the source of institutional collapse to the political culture and value system which have evolved in Jamaica over the period since Independence, and which have caused deformities in every single institution in the country.

Jamaica Betrayed: Institutional Failure in a Caribbean Setting

One of the original stated aims of Language and Liberation was to explain the language question to those involved in the fight to free the populations of the Creole speaking Caribbean from external political and economic control. The other was to provide a historical, political and socioeconomic context within which supposedly value-free official language policies and practices could be understood. Both these aims remain relevant twenty years later. The context within which official language policy operates has, however, become more complex, both internationally and within the Caribbean. The new chapter written specially for this updated edition addresses this.  The new extended chapter, Chapter 9, entitled The Historical Present, does three things. It tries to bring the reader up to date with many of the developments in language policy and practice within the Creole-speaking Caribbean. It also explains the new situation, both internationally and within the Caribbean, and puts these into historical perspective. A revised approach to the concept of diglossia emerges from this discussion. This provides us with a much clearer sense of how diglossia should be tackled in order to improve the language rights, and by extension economic and social rights, of the large majority of the population.  The chapter documents some aspects of the increased levels of assertiveness by speakers of Creole languages in the region. It describes the paths by which many of these languages are invading domains which were previously the preserve of the official European language. Speakers of Caribbean Creole languages are demonstrating increased confidence about the value of their own languages and associated cultural identities. These speakers are, therefore, now much more likely than before to assert their language rights and to impose their linguistic and cultural identities on the nation states within which they live. On the other side of the divide, however, those who benefit from the linguistic status quo remain strong, and are showing themselves to be very capable of adapting their own tactics to the new linguistic and socio-political realities. Those who benefit from a system will seek to maintain it and will give up nothing except that which is taken from them. The struggle continues. This second edition of Language and Liberation represents an ongoing contribution to this struggle.

The book offers description and assessment of the Jamaican language situation. It is aimed at providing basic information for interested laypersons as well as students of language and also at counteracting traditional social and linguistic prejudices, which are seen as affecting the usual assessments of the situation. Proficiency in English is essential for Jamaicans in view of its important role both within the island and internationally, but mastery of Standard English often falls short of the ideal. Some reasons for this failure are explored in the book. Its simple style is designed to enhance its appeal to the average reader. Topics specifically discussed include the functions of English and Creole(Patois) in the society and attitudes to these varieties, the origins,development and present state of English in Jamaica, the role of language in education and various proposals for taking Creole into account in classroom teaching.  Although the main focus is on the Jamaican situation, this is also set within the framework of English worldwide and of developments outside Jamaica involving the use of Creole.
