Ronald Bottrall, born in 1906, emerged as a notable poet in the thirties when F.R. Leavis singled out his early work for attention. His `Collected Poems' (1961) was warmly received. The major part of his new book was written during 1972, and in these recent poems the mature talents of a very distinctive and distinguished writer are at their best. The book is in five parts; the first is a single long narrative poem, rich in humour, about the poet's Cornish childhood. There follow groups of shorter poems about people, events and places - lyrical, meditative, or satirical; and always superbly skilful.

`Earth Erect' is the most recent work by a major European poet, the Yugoslav Vasko Popa. Born in 1922 in Grebenac, Banat, Vasko Popa now lives in Belgrade where he works as editor for a publishing house. He has published four previous books of verse. His poetic achievement has been recognized by such major awards as the Austrian State Prize for Literature, and his poems have become well known in English translation through the publication of his `Selected Poems' (Penguin, 1969). Vasko Popa has twice appeared at the Poetry International festival in London, in 1969 and again in 1973. He also visited the International Writing Program at Iowa in 1970.  Ted Hughes writes of `Earth Erect': `This is a great celebration of Vasko Popa's national roots. His universal language of X-ray images works here as beautifully as ever. When the poetic texture of the verbal code is cancelled (though these are lucid, skilful translations) we are not left with rhetorical mysteries or waywardness. Instead, we have solid hieroglyphic objects, meaningful in a direct way, simultaneously solid and spiritual, plain-statement and visionary, reminiscent of Kekulé's whirling dream snake. It is unique art, and lucky with its translator.'

The Roman poet Persius, who lived from AD 34-62, left a mere 650 lines of verse; enough, however, to have made him famous for his powerful and uncompromising satires on Roman society in the time of Nero. His poems were greatly admired by such contemporaries as the poets Lucan and Martial, and the critic Quintilian. Although he is not an easy poet, his work has retained its fascination and appeal throughout the centuries. His "Satires" was among the earliest printed books - the first edition was published in 1470 - and nearly sixty translations have been made into English. This is the first English edition of the fine version by the distinguished American poet W.S. Merwin. Professor William S. Anderson, a leading authority on Roman satire, has fully annotated the translations; in his introduction he explores the background to Persius' life and work, and sets the poems in an illuminating historical and critical perspective.
