Orra White Hitchcock brings to light the little-known art of one of the Connecticut River Valley's earliest female artists and a leading scientific illustrator of her generation, from her lyrical images of flora, to her massive classroom wall charts and her picturesque lithographs of the Connecticut and Deerfield Rivers. Robert L. Herbert and Daria D'Arienzo illuminate Hitchcock's life and art and reveal new discoveries and previously unknown drawings. Additionally, Elizabeth Farnsworth contributes an analysis of Hitchcock's watercolors of flowers and grasses from the vantage point of her own work as a botanical illustrator, while geologist Tekla Harms describes how the artist's large classroom drawings supplemented observable phenomena with representations of unseen geological structures crucial to geologic education. This generously illustrated catalogue, produced in conjunction with an exhibition at Amherst College's Mead Art Museum, celebrates the memorable art of a gifted American woman. The Myth and Madness of Ophelia explores the visual representation of one of Shakespeare's most intriguing and popular heroines, from her earliest appearance in 18th-century illustrated editions of Hamlet to the present. It includes paintings, prints, drawings, book illustrations, film, photography, and dance. Among the diverse range of artists are Benjamin West, Eugene Delacroix, Julia Margaret Cameron, Edward Steichen, Gwen John, Alfred Hitchcock, and Louise Bourgeois. Carol Solomon Kiefer provides an historical and analytical overview of the representation of Ophelia along with discussions of her identification with female madness, changing concepts of femininity, and her appropriation in contemporary art and popular culture. Georgianna Ziegler (Folger Shakespeare Library) considers the spiritualization of Ophelia in the Victorian era. H. R. Coursen (University of Maine) focuses on major stage and film Ophelias in the 20th century.

The catalog essays provide an overview of Josephine's life and a history of her residence, Malmaison. The image and iconography of the empress are explored in official and unofficial portraits as well as in British caricatures and French popular prints, miniatures, sculpture and decorative arts. Her collecting interests and patronage are examined - from horticulture, botanical illustration and the design of her garden at Malmaison to fashion, commemorative projects and contemporary art, including women artists and the painters of the Troubadour style. Other key themes include Josephine's role as a collector, the medieval revival of the early nineteenth century and the celebrated painting of the coronation by Jacques-Louis David.

Re-Inventing Tokyo is the first examination in either English or Japanese that considers portrayals of Tokyo in light of that city's continuous re-invention since the mid-nineteenth century. Using a carefully selected group of more than 170 prints, photographs, paintings, and textiles, Re-Inventing Tokyo documents the changes that took place as Tokyo modernized and Westernized in the mid-nineteenth century, became the center of modern urban life in Japan before the Second World War, and rebuilt itself as part of the country's economic miracle in the postwar era. This richly illustrated book includes five essays and a checklist of exhibited works divided into ten thematic sections, each prefaced by a narrative introduction. This volume accompanies an exhibition of the same name at the Mead Art Museum at Amherst College, organized and curated by Samuel C. Morse.

Eye Mind Heart: A View of Amherst College at 200 is the signature book of Amherst College's bicentennial. In her mission to write the College's history, author Nancy Pick '83 wondered what it was actually like to be at Amherst at different times in the past. What classes did students take in 1821? What were admissions requirements in 1921? What did students protest about in 1971? The result is Eye Mind Heart: A View of Amherst College at 200, a beautifully designed and lavishly illustrated book that aims to be as entertaining as it is illuminating. Based on years of research, the book shares the familiar as well as the untold stories of the people of the College--the poets, the Nobel Prize winners, the groundbreakers, and the controversies. "When I took on this project in 2015, my assignment from the College was to write the book I'd want to read," said Pick, a former newspaper journalist and the author of three previous books about history. In her afterword, President Biddy Martin wrote, "Pick's witty and imaginative book reads like a conversation she is having with her readers about the people, traditions, and intellectual feats that attach us to Amherst." Eye Mind Heart also has a foreword by Cullen Murphy '74, former College trustee chair and editor at large for The Atlantic magazine.
