This conference is dedicated to supernova remnants in their earliest phase of evolution. Its main goals are to provide an observational overview, particularly in light of recent advances, and then to set the observations in context by highlighting a number of physical processes that are important in young supernova remnants and also by examining a few specific remnant details.

<p>Over the next decade or two, an impressive array of scientific instruments at the Tevatron, RHIC (Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider) and LHC (Large Hadron collider), LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational Observatory) and SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey), to name a few, will usher in the most comprehensive program of study of the fundamental forces of nature and the structure of the universe. The Gamma-Ray Astrophysics 2001 Symposium offered the opportunity for participants to discuss important results from the nine years of operations of the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO), which ceased operations on June 4, 2000. Discussions also included new results from current missions such as HETE-II, Chandra, and XMM-Newton. In addition, results from ground-based VHE gamma-ray and radion observatories, and other ground-based and space missions related to high energy astrophysical sources were discussed. On the horizon, new gamma-ray space telescopies like GLAST, Swift, INTEGRAL, and AGILE will be launched in the next few years. Papers include mission capabilities and anticipated science from these upcoming missions.

This proceedings volume contains a collection of papers presented at the International Symposium on Hadrons and Nuclei. Among many specific subjects in this field we chose to discuss (i) interactions of mesons with nucleons and nuclei, (ii) electromagnetic probes of nucleons and nuclei, (iii) strangeness in nuclear physics, (iv) hadrons in nuclear matter, and (v) lattice QCD and other related topics.
