The coastal zone is one of the most dynamic environments on our planet and is much affected by global change, especially sea-level rise. Coastal environments harbour valuable ecosystems, but they are also hugely important from a societal point of view. This book, which draws on the expertise of 21 leading international coastal scientists, represents an up-to-date account of coastal environments and past, present and future impacts of global change. The first chapter of the book outlines key principles that underpin coastal systems and their behaviour. This is followed by a discussion of key processes, including sea level change, sedimentation, storms, waves and tides, that drive coastal change. The main part of the book consists of a discussion of the main coastal environments (beaches, dunes, barriers, salt marshes, tidal flats, estuaries, coral reefs, deltas, rocky and glaciated coasts and coastal groundwater), and how these are affected by global change. The final chapter highlights strategies for coping with coastal change. Readership: final year undergraduate and postgraduate-level students on coastal courses in a wide range subjects, including geography, environmental management, geology, oceanography and coastal/civil engineering. We have many reasons to believe that the history of the development of the earth's crust is fundamentally dependent on processes in the upper mantle to a depth not exceeding 1000 km. Because of this relation, the Upper Mantle Project was organized as an international program of geophysical, geochemical, and geological studies concerning the 'upper mantle and its influence on the development of the earth's crust.' Many important results have emerged during the course of the Upper Mantle Project. Probably the most significant is the delineation in some detail of the 'fine structure'—the lateral and vertical variations of properties—of the upper mantle. These results have fully convinced us that there is a fundamental relation between this fine structure, the motions of materials in the upper mantle, and activities at or near the surface of the earth such as earthquakes (and the types of earthquake motions), volcanism, the building and deformation of mountains, and the differentiation of various rock types, including concentrations that are of economic interest.

This is caused primarily by the existence of a wide variety of model users. Quantitative models may be purely empirical, that is based on data sets, semi-empirical, that is relying on physics whenever appropriate and available, but the "holes" being filled in with data as necessary, and finally purely physical models. It was apparent at the meeting that most current quantitative modeling efforts at this point in time are semi-empirical. This is partly because the physics of the magnetosphere is not yet entirely understood. At the same time, however, there is a large user community that needs models that can accurately describe magnetospheric features. The preponderance of semi-empirical models results because current data sets describing various magnetospheric features and processes are limited. There is some additional discussion of this topic in the section summaries. In particular, Cauffman in his introduction to the electric field section makes the useful distinction between "explanatory" and "representative" models. It is believed that all kinds of modeling will continue because of the various needs of the model user community.

Quantitative Modeling of Magnetospheric Processes (Geophysical Monograph Series)

Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 23. This volume is primarily an outgrowth of a major international program of cooperative research between earth scientists in the United States and their counterparts in Southeast Asia. Most of the research has been promoted and sponsored under the banner of Seatar, an acronym for ‘Studies of East Asian Tectonics and Resources.’ The program had its scientific inception at a workshop held in Bangkok in October 1973. Most of the U.S. Seatar research programs have been funded by the Office of the International Decade of Ocean Exploration (IDOE) of the National Science Foundation (NSF), but many closely related projects have been supported by other sections of the NSF, by the Office of Naval Research, and by others.

"I'll ask Hugh about it," flashed through my mind, but not past my lips since he's been dead for over two years. I wonder if this isn't typical for his friends and colleagues. Hugh's ability and willingness to help, his unselfish cooperation not just in research but in life, are what made him special to those who worked closely with him. Many who read this volume are familiar with the varied contributions he made to rock mechanics and to high?]pressure research. Consistent with his reputation, the things that impressed me when I first worked with Hugh in 1969 were his enthusiasm for work and his ability to keep pressure systems working well. Although these qualities still come to mind when I think of Hugh, the thing that usually remains is a warm feeling of pleasure at having been his friend and shared part of his life.

The Brittle-Ductile Transition in Rocks: The Heard Volume (Geophysical Monograph Series)

Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 58. The American Geophysical Union Chapman Conference on the Physics of Magnetic Flux Ropes was held at the Hamilton Princess Hotel, Hamilton, Bermuda on March 27–31, 1989. Topics discussed ranged from solar flux ropes, such as photospheric flux tubes, coronal loops and prominences, to flux ropes in the solar wind, in planetary ionospheres, at the Earth's magnetopause, in the geomagnetic tail and deep in the Earth's magnetosphere. Papers presented at that conference form the nucleus of this book, but the book is more than just a proceedings of the conference. We have solicited articles from all interested in this topic. Thus, there is some material in the book not discussed at the conference. Even in the case of papers presented at the conference, there is generally a much more detailed and rigorous presentation than was possible in the time allowed by the oral and poster presentations.

In March 1989, the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) sponsored a symposium on Explosion Source Phenomenology at Lake Tahoe, California. The purpose was to summarize the state of knowledge of the underground explosion source, based on U.S. experience at the Nevada Test Site (NTS). Specifically, the goals were to summarize knowledge of the explosion source, to identify limits of that knowledge and existing problems, and to propose directions of future research and data?]collection efforts.
