Nicholas Alexandrovich Berdyaev (1874-1948) was a Russian philosopher and activist who changed the philosophical, aesthetic and religious landscape of the 20th century. The author of more than 15 books and nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature seven times, he spoke in a new way about the centrality of creativity to what it means to be human.In 1922, along with other elite representatives of Russian culture, science and theology, Berdyaev was exiled from Russia by the Soviet authorities on the renown "Philosophers' Ship." Dr. S. James Shafer, M.D., Dr. Prillaman’s neurologist, is the principal Founder of Vero Neurology. He is Medical Director of the Indian River Medical Center Stroke Center as well as Medical Director of the MS Center of Vero Beach. Dr. Shafer completed his undergraduate work at the University of Florida. He went on to complete medical school and internship at the University of Miami in Florida. Eleanor W. Prillaman, M. Ed., Dr. Prillaman’s wife, holds the B.A. in Sociology from Woman’s College of The University of North Carolina and the Masters in Early Childhood Education from Virginia Commonwealth University. She taught at the elementary and junior high school levels, and worked in school social work.
