The talks contained in Revelations of the Unseen, short and to the point, are among the most beautiful oratory the world has ever known. Our translations of this and other of the Shakhs works surviving in manuscript form in Oriental collections around the world are intended to make them more widely available and accessible to Muslims and non-Muslims alike. This is probably the best known of Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir's works as there have been previous translations of it in both English and German.

62 Discourses [Majalis] by Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani in the guesthouse [ribat] and the schoolhouse [madrasa] in Bagdad, between the years AH 545 and AH 546. Longer than the discourses of Revelations of the Unseen, these profoundly moving lectures used to be attended by crowds of more than seventy thousand people. As we have been told in the Shaikh's biography, Necklaces of Gems, more than 400 inkwells would be used in one session by the scribes recording his every word. Treasured for centuries by those fortunate enough to have a handwritten copy, the entire 62 discourses are available in English for the first time. These discourses cover every aspect of the spiritual path necessary for those who aspire to attain to the nearness of Allah.

The Sublime Revelation (Al-Fath ar-Rabbani)

Known as the Malfuzat, and generally found appended to manuscripts of Al-Fath ar-Rabbani [The Sublime Revelation], these are various sayings of Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani made during the same time period covered by al-Fath ar-Rabbani, but are not discourses in their own right and thus do not fit into any of them. This is a collection of sayings and short talks on different topics of immense value to the believer. It is in the Malfuzat that the Shaikh mentions twice that wilayat [saintship] should be the goal of every Muslim, that is to say, that it is not beyond the aspiration of the common man to become a wali of Allah. Utterances of Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani (Malfuzat)

This book contains the commentaries of Shaykh Wali Raslan's work by Shaikh Zakariyya al-Ansari (d AH 926) and Shaikh Ali b. Atiyya Alawan al-Hamawi (d AH 936). Shaikh Zakariyya' al-Ansari, whose commentary on the Risala is to be found in this book, had this to say: "Now then, the science of Divine Unity is one of the noblest of the sciences, nay, it is the noblest of them all and works composed on the subject include ar-Risala ar-Raslaniyya, by the Imam well versed in the knowledge of Allah (Exalted is He), Raslan ad-Dimashqi - may Allah perfume his resting place and make Paradise his habitation. Since this is one of the most original books written on the science of Divine Unity ('Ilm at-Tawhid), and the most comprehensive treatment of the subject within such a short space, I prayed to Allah, (Exalted is He) for help and guidance in composing a commentary that would analyze its wording and explain its meaning." Many charismatic powers and supernatural talents have been attributed to Shaikh Wali Raslan, including those related in Qala'id al-Jawahir (Necklaces of Gems). In this work, which is essentially a biography of Shaikh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani (may Allah be well pleased with him), Shaikh Muhammad Ibn Yahya at-Tadifi says: "He was one of the pre-eminent Shaikhs of Syria, one of those remarkable individuals who know through direct experience (a'yan al-arifin), and one of those who are outstanding on account of their superior skills. He was endowed with lofty indications, with elevated aspirations, with truthful expressions, with supernatural charismatic exploits (karamat khariqa), with majestic spiritual stations, and with exalted situations. He held the highest degree of directly acquired forms of knowledge (ma'arif), the loftiest position in the realm of the realities (Haqa'iq), and the foremost standing in nearness, clear unveiling and brilliant illumination (fath), as well as firmly established empowerment and an effective aptitude for management.

This is Book XII of Imam Ghazali's 'Ihya Ulum al-Din (Revival of the Religious Sciences), translated by the eloquent Muhtar Holland. Topics of the section on marriage in the 'Ihya include: benefits of marriage, challenges of marriage, selecting a spouse, rules of married life, relations between husband and wife, having children, preferred actions at childbirth, obligations of spouses to each other, and avoiding divorce.Imam Abu Hamid Muhammad al-Ghazali (450/1058-505/1111) is justly described as a "towering figure" in the history of Islam. He was born in the Iranian town of Tus, studied Islamic law and theology at the Seljuq college in Nishapur, and became a distinguished professor at the famous Nizamiyya University in Baghdad.Despite his glittering success, he was inwardly dissatisfied, so he abandoned his career for the life of hardship, abstinence and devotion to worship. During ten years of wandering, he experienced a spiritual transformation, in which the Truth came to him at last, as something received rather than acquired.Blessed with an inner certainty, he then applied his outstanding faculties and vast learning to the task of revitalizing the whole Islamic tradition. Through his direct personal contacts, and through his many writings, he showed how every element in that tradition could and should be turned to its true purpose.Imam Ghazali's magnum opus is aptly entitled "The Revival of the Religious Sciences [Ihya' 'Ulum ad-Din]." In its four volumes, the author deals with every aspect of the outer and inner life of the Muslim. The subject of Marriage, discussed in the section covered by this translation, is surely of particular interest and importance to Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

The book is a history the lives and teachings of the Khwajagan Masters of Wisdom of the Naqshbandi Sufi Order who lived in Central Asia between the 10th and 15th centuries. The ranks of the Khwajagan include the great Sufis Abd al-Khaliq al-Ghujdawani and Baha ad-Din Naqshband, who gave his name to the Naqshbandi Order, though he did not found it. The many branches of the Naqshbandia survive to this Day.
