Many times society doesn't recognize or accept the depth of grief that children experience. Goodbye my good friend. Goodbye til we meet again. Goodbye is so hard to say. After the uncontrollable tears of sadness, we begin to heal, sometimes very slowly. Gradually, as we begin to heal, we remember our lost loved one with mixed emotions of grief and joy. And often times, without the slightest warning, we feel a delicate tear on our cheek. A fragile tear created mostly by love. A few years ago I read, with great interest, and sadness, the story of the war dogs of Vietnam. Although they were responsible for saving the lives of many American soldiers, they were forgotten by our government at the end of the war, and cast aside as nothing more than equipment. I vowed to herald the silent voices of these courageous and forgotten animal heroes through education and the promotion of memorials and commemorative postage stamps. Mine is but a small voice, yet a voice, for the thousands of service animals that have sacrificed their lives, in silence, for our freedom during times of war. These are the silent voices that must be heard. Many people have asked me if I have personally interviewed war dog handlers. The answer is yes. But they were too disheartened to revive the tragic events of their canine companions. So in respect to them I use the stories that others have been fortunate enough to hear. And I share them with those that have chosen to remain silent. May America listen. . . Throughout history, and during every modern war, soldiers have served as dog handlers. The bond created between dog and man became a relationship and memorable experience like no other. In the course of the Vietnam War an estimated ten thousand American potential casualties (or seventeen per cent of the total fifty-eight thousand American fatalities) were prevented as a result of the four thousand canine soldiers. Only two hundred sixty-one dog handlers were killed in action. In many instances the dogs prevented soldiers from triggering a booby trap or stepping on a land mine. They also alerted their handlers to hidden enemy soldiers as far as a thousand yards away. The canine warriors detected underwater saboteurs by the smell of their breath from the reeds they used as snorkels. Some dogs even covered their handlers with their own bodies to protect them from gunfire and shrapnel, while losing their own lives in return. Former dog handler, Charlie Cargo, tells of the day his dog Wolf, a German Shepherd, refused to allow him to proceed any further up the trail. "I looked straight ahead and not more than two feet away was a trip wire. I would have died right there if he hadn't found the wire." The amazing stories of canines saving American soldiers in Vietnam goes on and on. From 1960 to 1975 Vietnam became one of the longest and most unpopular wars ever fought by the American armed forces. Unfortunately many of our heroic soldiers returned home abandoned and unrecognized. And much like their human counterparts, many of the Vietnam canine veterans also received a different kind of homecoming. Fewer than two hundred of the four thousand canine soldiers were returned home. Of the tens of thousands of missions logged by the four thousand American war dogs in Vietnam, some three hundred twenty-five died in the line of duty, while approximately six hundred succumbed to tropical disease. The team was so effective that the Viet Cong offered a bounty for dead dogs or their handlers. What happened to the remaining seventy-two percent of these heroic dogs?

A few years ago a radio announcer asked me, "Do you think the majority of people in the real and everyday world really care that much about pet loss and grief?"   At the time I was idealistic and replied, "Yes." But then I realized that most of my world, as a veterinarian, evolves around people that care about their animals.   Sadly enough, when I started to look outside of that world, I discovered that most people and religion as well probably don't get the true feeling of the sorrow that accompanies the death of an animal companion.   "Get over it, it's just an animal, go buy another one to replace the dead one," are all too common phrases returned. The psychologists label it disenfranchised grief meaning it doesn't belong, it isn't normal.   At times it seems that I walk alone with these feelings. But along the way many people have managed to lift my spirits and to give me strength.  This book contains a few examples that help me to realize the importance of the human and animal bond. And I now realize that it is an important bond of pure love that can never be broken or cast aside. And in some sense I am also comforted to know that I don't always walk alone.

Of the pioneers who came to Utah from the Southern States in the 1800s, a group was asked to go on to Southern Utah and grow cotton, a commodity needed in the face of the Civil War. Life was hard, food was scarce, and more babies and children died than lived as flood after flood destroyed their crops. Stories of individual pioneers. Over 200 photos. Thousands of families left their homes to come to Northern Utah, almost a desert land. Among these stalwart pioneers came a group from the South, before the bitter fighting of the Civil War. These pioneers left a South that was fertile, lush, and green, where huge plantations grew bounteous crops. On March 3, 1857, Samuel N. Adair and ten other Southern families were asked by Brigham Young to go to Southern Utah-reportedly a more fertile land-to grow cotton, a much needed commodity. Less than a month later, Robert D. Covington and another group of twenty-eight Southern families left to join the first group. The day following their arrival on May 7, 1857, the two groups met together under the direction of President Haight of Cedar City and organized themselves to function as a group. They formed a city, which they named-Washington City. Immediately they started digging ditches and canals, then the greater effort of building dams-to provide water to irrigate their crops. These Southerners decided to name their land -Dixie-and later it was called Utah's Dixie. Life was hard and food was scarce. More babies and children died than lived. These stout-hearted pioneersfound the natural environment of Southern Utah unforgiving of their efforts to harness the river. Successive floods drowned out their hard fought efforts to produce crops. Eventually the railroad connected the United States from coast to coast and cotton became available. Thus the cotton effort in Southern Utah was brought to a close. The valiant efforts of these Southerners have never been forgotten and their legendary spirit remains with us today. Harold P. Cahoon, born in Salt Lake City, attended the University of Utah and gained a B.S degree in Ceramics. Receiving the Edward Orton Fellowship at the University of Washington, he graduated with a M.S. degree in Ceramic Engineering with a minor in Mineralogy. In 1955 he received a Ph.D. in Ceramics and a minor in Mineralogy from the University of Utah. He rose to president and CEO of Interstate Brick Company, and was also president of Entrada Corporation, Wasatch Chemical Company, Fox Clay Company, and Interstate Land Company. Priscilla Johnson Cahoon was born in Mesa, Arizona, and graduated from Lincoln High School in Orem, Utah. She is the mother of five children, twenty-five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. She was the president of junior and senior high school PTA organizations, president of Sugarhouse Rotary Arms, president of Neighborhood Garden Club, president of Salt Lake Literary Art Guild, Five-year Service Award volunteer at the Primary Children's Hospital, Member of the Preservation Commission of Washington City, and president of the Washington City Historical Society.
