Scalig., Orat., I, p. 30. che meritava, dichiarando che con tal gente, che adoperava gli insulti invece degli argomenti, egli non combatteva e che del resto nemmeno era questione che gli apparteneva, perchè egli non avea combattuto Cicerone, ma i ciceroniani (1). Per vendicarsi di questo disprezzo lo Scaligero scrisse nel 1535 un'altra orazione, che è più ancora della prima un'invettiva personale e che perciò non ha interesse per la nostra storia. L'odio dello Scaligero non molto dopo pare siasi smorzato; infatti nel 4 maggio 1536 (2) scriveva da Agen all'Onfalio, che gli aveva chiesto di far la pace con Erasmo, di esser pronto a farla e sinceramente, protestando ch'egli si mise in quella polemica non per odio personale, ma per difesa di un principio. Non so quanto sia da credere a una simile protesta; ad ogni modo la riconciliazione dello Scaligero non arrivò a tempo, perchè Erasmo era morto. Più interessante è il libro del Doleto (3) contro Erasmo, quantunque anch'egli mischi vergognosamente le ingiurie e gli insulti alla discussione. È in forma di dialogo, che si suppone avvenuto a Padova tra Simone di Villanova e Tomaso Moro, e fu stampato nel 1535. Esso comprende due parti principali; la prima è una difesa del Longolio, che il Doleto crede essere stato posto in caricatura da Erasmo sotto il nome di Nosopono. In questa prima parte anzitutto difende il Longolio, dicendo fra le altre cose che alla religione cristiana hanno recato maggior danno le uggiose e importune...
