As recognized by Schmidt(2005) and Dumas-Hines et al (2001)many institutions of higher learning are facing the challenges of finding ways to diversify their campuses. This work by leading minority educators aims to answer the challenge by creating philosophical statements that reflect a national consensus , setting goals to diversify students and faculty, examining best practices, and implementing activities and action plans. The authors discuss how both historically majority and minority institutions need to broaden and deepen their efforts. Attention is paid to Latino/ Asian-Pacific Islander faculty and student populations and motivations. Action plans that emphasize incentives and transnational and global realities are discussed. Living Anarchy: Theory And Practice In Anarchist Movements

Anarchism stands as one of the the most vital social movements of the twentieth century. Yet this large( and growing) contemporary movement remain obscured by public and scholarly misconceptions as to its aim and purpose. Lost in recent accounts are the creative and constructive practices undertaken daily by anarchist organizers seeking a world free from violence, oppression and exploitation. An examination of some of these constructive anarchist projects, which provide examples of politics grounded in everyday resistance, offers insights into real world attempts to radically transform social relations in the here and now of everyday life.  In order to bring their ideas to life, anarchists create working examples. To borrow the radical union phrase, they are ''forming the structure of the new world in the shell of the old.'' These experiments in living, popularly referred to as ''DIY'' (Do-It-Yourself), are the means by which contemporary anarchists withdraw their consent from authoritarian institutions and begin contracting other relationships. This book represents the first detailed analysis of contemporary anarchist movements in North America. It critically examines the possibilities and problems facing attempts to build DIY community-based social and political movements, which seek radically to transform social relations. The work also engages theoretical developments around these emerging political practices.  The text is organized to illustrate the development of the diversity of anarchist strategies and tactics over time beginning with shorter term or temporary, and often more dramatic, practices such as black blocs and street reclaiming before moving to a discussion of more durable projects such as alternative media projects, free spaces and infoshops. Attention is also given to anarchist involvement in non-anarchist community-based movements, including anti-poverty and squatting struggles. The case studies also include a look at do-it-yourself anarchist food preparation and publishing. Because the presence of the state and the possibility of repression is a constant threat facing anarchists a chapter is devoted to the criminalization of dissent. This anthology focuses on a literary figure Sophocles Antigone who seems to have taken on a life independent of the play in which she was first featured: Antigone (441 B.C.) She has since appeared in numerous other plays, operas and films even in comic books and songs especially in the twentieth century: in the drama alone, we see her in works from Brecht and Hasenclever to Cocteau and Anouilh to Fugard and Heaney. Indeed, few narratives have been adapted for the stage as often as the legend of Antigone; each generation reinvents the myth to fit its own circumstances. In each reappearance, she bears the marks of the time that (re)produced her, and these manifestations of her character mutually modify each other. That is, while the character brings a known body of information to the new artistic situation, its place in that new context may well alter our understanding of the earlier appearances of Antigone as well. All the variations on the Antigone theme attest, each in its own way, to the immense vitality that has continued to inhabit this complex dramatic character over the centuries. At the center of Sophocles original play is a struggle to reconcile personal beliefs with the needs or dictates of society. At no time is such a struggle more relevant than in periods of war, so it is not surprising that new adaptations of Antigone cluster around periods of armed conflict, whether between nations or within a single nation itself: for example, Argentina in the seven-year grip of its Dirty War on its own people in Griselda Gambaro's Antigonia Furiosa (1986), and the Republic of Congo as it is torn by AIDS, political corruption, internecine hostility, and military oppression in Sylvain Bemba's Black Wedding Candles for Blessed Antigone (1988). In Antigone Adapted, the nations or territories in question are ones not typically featured in Western anthologies of drama: Puerto Rico, in the troubled possession of the United States, in Luis Rafael Sánchez's The Passion of Antígona Perez (1968); and Slovenia, under the iron yoke of both Tito and the Soviet Union, in Dominik Smole's Antigona (1959). These translations---of Smole's play and Sanchez's---have never before appeared in English in the West,and the Sophocles translation is also a new one; This book makes these plays available for the first time. Though these twentieth-century adaptations of Antigone differ widely in style and theme, they all have their ultimate source in Sophocles play. The text of the original is thus like a prism: turn it this way or that, and different colors shine through in each instance. The ancient war between Argo and Thebes has developed an archetypal quality in this age of international conflict an age in which our everyday lives are frequently disrupted by events on the global political stage as well as the local domestic one. It would be ironic if psychoanalysis disappeared during the 21st century ,overtaken by smart newer drugs or so-called evidence based methods of psychological help. As we move through the twenty-first century, almost all artists, students, and critics working in theater will have had earlier and greater exposure to film than to theater. In fact, film has become central to the way in which we perceive and formulate stories, images, ideas, and sounds. At the same time, film, video, and digital media occupy an increasingly significant place in theater study, both for the adaptation of plays and for the documentation or preservation of theatrical performances. Yet far too often young theater and film artists, as well as educators, make the jump from one medium to the other without being fully aware of the ways in which the qualities of each medium affect content and artistic expression. This book is intended to fill such a gap by providing a theoretical and practical foundation for understanding the effect that film and drama have had, and continue to have, on each other s development. The theoretical as well as practical foundation provided by the writings in this volume, furthermore, is the one established during the fifty years from 1916 to 1966, when, despite the advent of the feature-length film, the introduction of sound, and the triumph of color, the theater was still seen as a serious artistic rival to the cinema. The introduction to Theater and Cinema provides a history of the relationship between theater and film, starting with the pre-cinematic, late nineteenth-century impulse towards capturing spectacular action on the stage and examining the artistic and commercial interaction between film and drama, both in popular and experimental work, throughout the twentieth century. By attempting to trace the cross-fertilization between theater and film connecting the business practices of the evolving Hollywood system, for example, to the types of artistic appropriation in which Broadway has long engaged the introduction provides an historical context for the essays to come, while arguing for the vital importance of an understanding of both theater and film to the contemporary practice of either.

Drawing on North American, Ethnic, and Cultural Studies, the volume proposed here addresses the construction of identity in relation to place(s), ethnicities and culture(s), and sets out to explore the ambivalences, fluctuations and modalities which highlight such a process while paving the path for the fashioning of global identities. Moreover, it presents the identity politics and poetics of diverse authors and artists in an attempt to recover the discursive techniques employed in their identification processes and assess the significance of cultural agency in a national, multinational and global context. The American context of today is the jumping off point for a global discussion of identity and cultural change that speaks to the emergence of the 2nd and 3rd world as new cultural and social avatars. Description: The volume is framed within the field of American and cross-cultural studies. The Independent Theatre's production of Ghosts at the Royalty Theatre, London in 1891 precipitated one of the most famous theatrical quarrels in European theater history. Although many have commented on the extremity of the response from the conservative reviewers, few have remarked on the fact that the majority of these reviews were laden with disease metaphors. Ibsen, in the age of the classic epidemic, comes to be perceived by his English hosts as a contagious entity. The importance of Ghosts, then, lies in its ability, to "introduce into the cultural matrix a germ, a foreign body, that cannot be accounted for by its existing codes and practices" (Derek Attridge, The Singularity of Literature, 55-6). In this scholarly monograph, Dr.Matos treats the theatrical reviews as serious cultural artifacts in order to avoid reducing them to mere entertaining invective in order, ultimately, to trace the transmission of modern dramatic innovation from Ibsen to Arthur Wing Pinero and George Bernard Shaw. Arthur Wing Pinero wrote a series of plays in the 1890s distinctive both for their seriousness and their seeming similarity to Ibsen. The Second Mrs. Tanqueray and The Notorious Mrs. Ebbsmith establish Pinero as both a popular and a serious writer, something Ibsen could never quite accomplish. Although it is unfair to lay the "improvements" in Pinero's method solely at the feet of Ibsen, it is fair the author believes to demonstrate that without Ibsen's boundary-breaking work, Pinero could never have produced these important plays, which helped bring the London stage into the modern period and ushered in a new era of dramatic modernism that included Shaw and Wilde.

Their experience has been that, too often, college students limit their reading of material about race to synopses versus synergies of information. The primary purpose of this holistic handbook is to provide guiding prescriptive principles toward institutionalization of policies and practices that foster global diversity and local inclusion in institutions of higher learning in the aftermath of the unsettling and disturbing racial incidents in the Deep South following the re-election President Barack H. Obama.
 Ironically, President Obama was criticized in 2013 for the lack of leadership diversity (especially women) among his cabinet and senior staff. In any event, this handbook has been conceptualized based on the individual, collective and culminating Southern ''cotton to'' experiences of the five authors from both predominantly/historically White institutions of higher learning (PWIs) and predominately/historically Black institutions of higher learning (HBCUs). Both institutional communities can use this book to create campus climate and culture for global diversity and local inclusion. The handbook encompasses seven chapters, seven conceptual frameworks in a logic model, and seven steps for campus-community collaboration. The book also highlights three dimensional circular themes and threads from spirituality in the preface and the initial chapter from several faiths and religions to introduce and symbolize spiritually different yet commonly denominating doctrines from around the world. We believe these themes and threads represent the Commonwealth of intellectual intersections in modern academe, driven by diverse intellectual capital and inclusive cerebral currency.
