Everett's treatise is important for introducing one of the two relations that are lacking in Malthusian theory between the increase of population and the increase of susbsistence. Everett argued that increase in population meant increased production of food and was therefore likely to induce improvements in methods of its production. Added to this reprint edition are "The Malthusian Theory--Discussed in a Correspondence between Alexander H. Vethake's Principles, one of the earliest systematic American economic treatises first published in 1838, was the closest of the period to the views of the English Ricardian school--"a good illustration of the transfer of classical economic inhibitions to the new continent" (Dictionary of American Biography). Vethake however attempted several innovations, notably broadening his concept of wealth to include services and that of capital to include intellectual products, and came close to approving the absorption of economic rent in taxes. His work also includes extensive sections on international trade and money and banking.

Hawtrey was one of the English pioneers of the "income" approach. In his first book he wrote: "The total effective demand for all commodities per unit of time is the aggregate of all money incomes. The total cost of production of all commodities per unit of time is the aggregate of all money incomes." This work also contains the germ of many of his later ideas on monetary theory; throughout his long career Hawtrey consistently viewed business cycles as essentially a monetary phenomena which must be controlled by regulation of credit.
