Located in Houston's Third Ward—a historic African-American neighborhood—Project Row Houses (PRH) is a community platform that enriches lives through art with an emphasis on cultural identity and its impact on the urban landscape. Since its inception in 1993, PRH has fostered a positive, creative environment in the community by infusing it with art and creativity and creating sustainable opportunities for artists, mothers, entrepreneurs, and residents. Today the PRH site encompasses five city blocks and houses thirty-nine structures that serve as home base to a variety of community-enriching initiatives, art programs, and neighborhood development activities.Collective Creative Actions: Project Row Houses at 25 highlights the history of the Third Ward neighborhood, PRH's role in its development over the past quarter-century, and the idea of social art practice from the perspective of PRH's five pillars: art and creativity; education; social safety net; good and relevant architecture; and economic sustainability. It also includes scholarly essays; a selection of impactful moments that have shaped the organization’s work; documentation of the hundreds of people who have participated in PRH programs; and numerous photographs. This work responds to a renewed emphasis on teaching in the academy. Written from the perspective of a classroom teacher, it is a practical application of the principles behind the critical thinking movement to the study of religion. Emphasizing that the acquisition of critical thinking depends less on what is taught than on how it is taught, the author presents concrete examples from his own experience to illustrate a student-centered approach to teaching. By demonstrating how the study of religion contributes to the development of critical thinking—through the acquistion of problem-solving, decision-making, and metacognitive skills—Penaskovic suggests its value to a broader liberal arts curriculum as well. Both a theoretical view of critical thinking and a nuts-and-bolts manual on how it can be used and assessed in the classroom, this work will challenge new and veteran teachers alike to reexamine and renew what the do in the classroom.

The great amount of research which has appeared in the journal, "American Literature," since 1949 has made a revision and an enlargement of the previous Analytical Index, published in 1954, imperative.  The present volume extends the coverage another ten years and, by combining the new material with the former index, provides an analysis of the first thirty volumes of the journal, beginning with 1929.Since the magazine has been from its beginning the chief repository of research in the field and the principal medium for scholarly reviews, an analysis of this material provides, in essence, a working bibliography for the serious student of American culture form 1929 to 1959.  Consequently, care has been taken to expand the already large number of cross-references so that material not clearly indicated by the titles of articles or books may be identified.

Encompassing another two decades of literary scholarship, the book provides an impressing listing of periodical contributions to the study of American literature.  The purpose of this collection has been as useful as possible.  With the present work this goal is still the guideline for a masterful bibliography, and the volume takes its place as an indispensable tool of reference for both the student and teacher of American literature.This compilation is collaborative; its core is a conflation of items based on the quarterly checklists of  "Articles on American Literature Appearing in Current Periodicals" in American Literature from January 1951 through January 1958.  Other items have been added frot the annual bibliographies in the Publications of the Modern Language Association of America, the American Quarterly, and the New England Quarterly.  And finally, there have been added listings from other more specialized bibliographies on genres or authors.The accumulated listings are arranged in a single author alphabet, with miscellaneous articles divided into convenient categories.  That this volume is nearly twice the length of its predecessor is an indication of the burgeoning scholarship devoted to American literature in the last twenty years.  It is of the greatest importance then that the scholar have the kind of comprehensive guide which will free him from the time -consuming task of searching out materials.  Lewis Leary's book provides just such a guide.Appearing concurrently with this volume is a reprinting of the popular Articles on American Literature 1900-1950, originally published in 1954.  This compilation (itself a revision and extension of the 1947 Articles on American Literature Appearing in Current Periodicals, 1920-1945) is an alphabetical listing of articles on American literature, primarily in English, appearing in periodicals from 1900 through 1950.

Both Dr. Brown and the Society collected stores from individuals&amp;#8212;Brown through his classes at Duke University and through his summer expeditions in the North Carolina mountains, and the Society by interviewing its members&amp;#8212;and also levied on the previous collections made by friends and members of the Society. The result was a large mass of texts and notes assembled over a period of nearly forty years and covering every aspect of local tradition.
