It seems the TikTok algorithm (aka BookTok) has blessed romance readers with a fresh, dark, and – let’s just say it –- *twisted* series to dive into, but are they worth the read?
The Twisted book series is a tetralogy with the following titles – Twisted Love, Twisted Games, Twisted Hate, and Twisted Lies. They were written by New York Times Best Selling romance author Ana Huang who has written several thrilling romances including the King of Sin and If Love series’.
What does ‘spicy’ mean to you? A fluid, sometimes contentious definition amongst Booktok-ers, Reddit-ors, Tumblr-ites and even the (usually) gentler denizens of Goodreads, this romance novel subgenre covers a surprising range.
For some, ‘spice’ might be anything more than coy, bedroom-door-closed, fade-to-black hints at (vanilla) sexual congress between leads, for others, no less than the darkest hinterlands of kink, dirty talk occasionally dubious consent and explicitly anatomical description will do. It’s also a definition that’s loose, welcoming, and democratic enough to take in sex more likely to feature participants of colour, LGBTQ partners, a spectrum of abilities and body types, as well as humour and dalliances with mythology or the supernatural.
Contrary to what our title may suggest, the novels we will share with you are not old. Though some of the books have been published over two-hundred years ago, a true classic romance novel’s most indelible quality is its timelessness. Not only were books such as Anna Karenina, Pride and Prejudice and Emma incredibly popular amongst its contemporary readers, they remain staples of our collective consciousness. If you’re looking for a swoon-worthy love story, these ‘old romances’ are worth the read every time.
