House of the Dragon Books in Order

Fire and Blood. The prequel book series to the popular A Song of Ice and Fire series only has one book right now. For fans of George R.R. Martin’s overall work, reading the House of the Dragon book before his other prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, makes the most sense.

Of course, this book comes chronologically before A Game of Thrones and the seven-book series:

The new sequel, Winds of Winter, and the planned A Dream of Spring should be read at the end. For those who have already enjoyed the ASOIAF series, as it is commonly abbreviated, The House of the Dragon book will add a lot of backstory and rich heritage to the overall thread of adventure, magic, and political intrigue throughout the whole series.

What Books are House of the Dragon Based on?

The House Targaryen, the sole dragon lord family remaining, moved to and claimed Dragonstone. The patriarch, Aegon the Conqueror, created the Iron Throne, and his descendants fought to retain control of this seat of power. This represents the actions that launched all the drama and intrigue that fantasy readers and watchers first fell in love with.

The fictionalized history follows along with hundreds of years of history of this unique and richly created world. Fans of the longer series will find new truths and in-depth descriptions of events and elements mentioned in those books and the TV show. They will get answers to questions they didn’t even realize they had, too.

Who are the houses battling for control in the world? Westerling, Strong, Cole, Velaryon, Hightower, Beesbury, Royce, and Mallister. Who are the dragons that affect how things go and turn out so often? There are seventeen named ones, including Rhaenyra Targaryen’s Syrax, Laena and Aemond’s Vhagar, Prince Lucerys Velaryon’s Arrax, and some named Seasmoke, Vermax, and more.

Two hundred years before Game of Thrones, the Targaryen’s were the ultimate power in the land. The eventual reliance on a female heir instead of the traditional son led to a brutal civil war that began the primary fighting for the Iron Throne, which lasted for a very long time.

In a unique blend of fiction and historical records, this book is told by a character who is a master of in-book world history. It reads half like an epic novel and half like a textbook for a history that does not really exist in our world… other than in the hearts and minds of fans of George R. R. Martin’s popular work. Doug Wheatly, a real-world artist, contributed over 80 black-and-white drawings to the book as well.

How Many House of the Dragon Books Are There?

Unfortunately for fans of the overall collection of stories set in this world, there is only one book in the House of the Dragon series: Fire and Blood. However, it is possible to satisfy your taste for more with related books available from major online and offline retailers. For example, you can find The Rise of the Dragon, an illustrated history of the Targaryen Dynasty, or The World of Ice & Fire: The Untold History of Westeros and the Game of Thrones. You can even grab yourself an official coloring book. These are not part of the House of Dragon series but are related to the overall world and collection.

Is the House of Dragons a Novel or Something Else?

While this book is fictional, of course, it is more of a pseudo-history book than a novel. There is no dialogue and little immediate action. Instead, it is a recounting of years by Archmaester Gyldayn of Westeros, an expert in in-world history. He shares his own insights and studies with the reader, and he gives scenes from different characters’ points of view when necessary to show what happened.

It is one of the things that made creating the House of the Dragon television series more of a challenge. True fans may not like some of the creative liberties taken that were necessary to give actors something to say on screen by now. However, most fans understand the difference between books and TV series or movies.

When is the Next House of Dragon Series Book Coming Out?

This is a question for the ages. For avid readers of fantasy epics still waiting for other books from author George R. R. Martin, it is difficult to say when they should expect the next book. There aren’t any concrete plans for a second book in this series, however. The fact that it is called a series at all raises some questions.

For those who enjoy watching the unforgettable tale untold on the screen, the second season of the HBO series came out earlier this year. House of the Dragon season three is currently in production with an estimated release date in 2026. A suspected fourth season is hinted at to wrap up the long history covered in the House of the Dragon book. For now, fans will have to make do with what is already out there, possibly reread the main series, or revisit Westeros in its ancient history book.

Additionally, consider exploring other booklists by BookScouter, such as the Six of Crows series by Leigh Bardugo, Freida McFadden’s best books, The Kingkiller Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss, Cassandra Clare’s books in order, and Brandon Sanderson’s books for more captivating reads.
