Matters of value and judgment are the subject of recently intensified debate within art criticism. Has art criticism suffered a collective failure of nerve as names and styles boom and bust with increasing rapidity? Conversely, does a discourse that traffics in value judgments risk being coopted into serving--or perhaps even serve outright--as a consumer guide to a bloated contemporary art market in which commerce and critical discourse frequently seem to be at odds with each other? Growing out of a forum that was held in Vancouver, Canada, Judgment and Contemporary Art Criticism includes transcripts of the forum's discussions, an extensive bibliography on art criticism, as well as newly commissioned texts by Jeff Derksen, Diedrich Diederichsen, James Elkins, Maria Fusco, Sven Lütticken, Tom Morton, Kristina Lee Podesva, William Wood and Tirdad Zolghadr.

How to assess the vicissitudes of the gradually "globalizing" art circuit without repeating recent curatorial clichés? Having watched one example of critical internationalism after another reduce itself to postcolonial platitude or self-congratulating adventurism, the participants in this book and its accompanying exhibition took on that tricky subject with an inquiry into Euro-American xenophilia. Rather than trying to build the proverbial Third World "platform," "forum," or "bridge," they asked, what makes bridging so attractive in the first place? Who stands to gain from searing critiques of the North and Northwest, and upholding the aims of the East and South? This project was organized by Tirdad Zolghadar, born in California, raised in Iran, England and Switzerland, and recently co-curator of the 2005 Sharjah Biennale. Participating artists include the Atlas Group, Shirin Aliabadi and Farhad Moshiri, Jens Haaning, Lisl Ponger, Shahrzad and Erik van Lieshout.

Meg Cranston's work often combines text and imagery from popular culture. With Kippenberger-esque energy and wit, Cranston investigates anthropological and physical issues in sculpture, installation, painting and drawing. Recent shows have featured, for instance, drawings and sculptures of bad teeth and their imagined physiognomic significance, a large composite photograph of an average-size American and a performance about the life of Marvin Gaye. This first monograph on Cranston's work includes texts by Carole Ann Klonarides and Tirdad Zolghadr, as well as an interview with the artist by Nico Israel. Published with Artspace, Auckland, New Zealand. Meg Cranston has shown internationally since 1988. She has been the recipient of a New School of Social Research Faculty Development Grant, an artist grant from the Penny McCall Foundation, a Guggenheim Fellowship and a faculty research grant from the Center for Asian American Studies at UCLA.

Following his futuristic novel Plot, polemical art theoretician Tirdad Zolghadr targets the moral economy of indeterminacy that makes curators and artists politically stunted, intellectually bankrupt and aesthetically predictable in his latest treatise. Curators, in particular, he sees as a necessary evil, at best offering one transgalactic statement, one buzzword after another. Even the mainstream is convinced it s better off doing the curating itself. Drawing on texts and projects by both artists and curators, including some transgalactic blunders of his own, Zolghadr ventures suggestions beyond the gravitational pull of business as usual. Independent writer/curator and professor at Bard College Center for Curatorial Studies, Zolghadr writes for frieze and other publications, and is editor-at-large for Cabinet magazine. He organized the UAE Pavilion at Venice Biennale 2009 and is curatorial advisor to the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi and frequent lecturer at the Intl. Academy of Art, Palestine.
